Catherine Opie gives us “Girlfriends”

Catherine Opie is one of our generation’s most celebrated photographers, and she also happens to be a lesbian. Her work is often queer, and her new exhibit, Girlfriends, is no different. In fact, you will recognize some of her subjects.

Girlfriends is on display through April 24 at New York City’s Gladstone Gallery. The exhibit is a series of color and black and white photography, both new and never-before-seen works from Opie’s archive. The photographer seeks to “explore the nature of butch-dyke identity through portraits.” Some of the other public figures involved include k.d. lang and Eileen Myles.

The New York Times writes, “Looking at her pictures can be uncomfortable, not because of their confrontational content but because they reveal as much about the beholder as the beheld.” That’s what Catherine Opie’s work is all about.
