Glenn Close says her kiss with Judy Davis is one of her favorites

As if the excitement about Glenn Close‘s return to the third season of the FX series Damages wasn’t big enough, the actress recently listed her 13 favorite movie roles, one of which was her role as a lesbian soldier in Serving Silence: The Margarethe Cammermeyer Story.

In the 1995 award-winning television film based on the true story of Colonel Margarethe Cammermeyer, Close depicts Cammermeyer’s tumultuous battle with the U.S. military’s decision to discharge her for being a lesbian.

Fifteen years later, Close reveals why playing Cammermeyer is one of her “favorite things [she’s] ever done.” Close recounts fondly her experience of having Cammermeyer during the filming process and describes her as an “exacting soldier, very strict about uniform and how you salute.” Close berates the anti-gay policy that discharged Cammermeyer from the military and says that she’s “always been highly sympathetic to the plights of gays, [and] what they’ve had to deal with.”

The moment most memorable for Close, however, while starring in the film, was her kiss with Judy Davis‘s character Diane:

…when Judy Davis and I had to kiss at the end, I really felt that for 30 seconds, maybe a minute, what it really, really felt like to be attracted to my own gender. It was kind of revelatory for me, a real frission moment. I’ll never forget it.

Us either! And with the president saying he’s going to repeal Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, what better time to revisit Serving in Silence?
