It is imperative that the lesbian community stand up and make our voices heard over this affront to human decency. The only way we are going to build a blue wave strong enough to sweep the Congressional Republicans out of office, and to remove the cruelest and most dangerous president to ever occupy the White House, is to create a coalition of the majority.
A coalition of minorities can, in fact, create the majority in our nation. This is what the party of Trump fears most. Even with the advantages the Republicans hold through gerrymandering and voter purging, both recently upheld by the Supreme Court, the coalition of the majority is strong enough to defeat them in November. The lesbian community must not sit on the sidelines as we approach the November midterms. We have so much at stake. Our community is like any other. We are comprised of families, elderly, young women seeking good educations and setting out on careers that could change the world. The situation at our southern border is intolerable. It is an abomination of all that America has stood for since our nation’s creation before President Donald J. Trump decided we needed to be made “great” again. It is beyond rational thought to see the United States of America rip children from their mothers’ arms – mothers who come to America to save their children from abhorrent, dangerous conditions in Central America. Our government is incarcerating toddlers and babies in facilities that are not even open for inspection, all to to make a misguided point of zero tolerance for people seeking asylum in this country that Donald Trump, Jeff Sessions and Stephen Miller, Senior Advisor to the President for Policy, who is the architect of this grotesque policy, believe will keep our country “safe.” Safe from what, exactly? Safe from immigrant mothers with children who will fill the many jobs open that Americans don’t want?
This is an issue every American must not turn away from. It is yet another outrage by Donald Trump aimed directly at women who he perceives as weak. Every bully seeks the weak target and the bully-in-chief is no different than the bully on the playground who pushes girls around just because girls won’t hit back. However, he is doing lasting damage to innocent children and causing mothers to fear, with very real concern, they will never see their children again.
