2020 U.S. Census Will Count Married Same-Sex Couples

The U.S. Census Bureau began sending out the 2020 census last week, which includes some new questions such as asking respondents if they are part of a same-sex couple. Americans will get the chance to fill out the census over the next several weeks by mail or online, and the results will be available to the public in December 2021.

Many gay rights activists feel it’s a step in the right direction, but the census isn’t counting same-sex couples who are not married. Further, it still won’t ask about sexual orientation, so many homosexual Americans won’t be identified as such.
