Lez Dish It Out! The AfterEllen Les/Bi News Round-Up

Happy Friday, loves! I hope you all had a fun and spooky Halloween this week. I know some of our favorite couples did, but we’ll get to that a little later. For now, let’s dive right into Lez Dish with Samira Wiley’s new show, a Modern Family bombshell, and some hot new music videos. Lez get to it!

Getty Images Sarah Hyland claims her Modern Family character, Haley Dunphy, could be bisexual. Yes, you read that right. Apparently this confirmation came from the actress in the midst of rumors regarding her sexuality, so Hyland addressed the question on Twitter. Here’s what Haley originally tweeted:

After the internet exploded and she received both excitement and backlash across the board, Hyland followed up with this:

Although the character Hyland plays in Modern Family has always been notorious for her relaxed view on sexuality and as a sexual person herself, no other implications have ever been made to reveal the character as bisexual on the show. Before anyone gets too critical of Hyland for claiming a label her character doesn’t explicitly have, I think her enthusiasm over that portrayal is refreshing. She loved her fans, and would be happy to give Haley Dunphy a bi storyline if the writers offered one up. Modern Family just began airing new episodes of its ninth season a few weeks ago, so here’s to hoping the series jumps on board.

Chastity Brown just released a new music video that celebrates lesbians! And love! And weddings! The singer, songwriter, and musician just recently released her new album called Silhouette of Sirens, and she dropped a heartfelt music video for a single from it. The super sweet, soulful song “Whisper” and video for its follows a group of women as two of them develop a relationship. We watch their love blossom throughout the video, which concludes with a wedding that’s presided over by Brown herself.

I grabbed some stills of this gorgeous montage for you to feast your eyes on.

Brown had the following to say to OUT magazine about this particular song for the video premiere:

This is a love song. I wanted the video to be a string of intimate moments that represent the beauty of queer love.
Chastity Brown is an incredibly talented artist, so be sure to grab her new album, and give the video for “Whisper” a watch here.

Speaking of lesbian representation in music, chances are you’ve heard Hayley Kiyoko’s new pop anthem “Feelings,” but have you seen that adorable video yet? It was released a few weeks ago on MTV’s “Total Request Live” revival show, and has already passed two million hits on YouTube.

The singer recently did an interview with Billboard discussing the fun song, the video inspiration, and mainstream acceptance.

On the fan response to her video:

It’s amazing. I’m so thrilled and excited that people are watching the video and they’re loving it. It’s one of my favorite videos I’ve done, and it was one of the hardest videos, and there was a lot of work that went behind it. It feels great that people are actually watching it.

Kiyoko also addressed initial pushback she received during the creation of her earlier music videos and their lesbian content:

I feel like people are starting to get the hang of it, that I’m going to always like girls and there’s always going to be a girl involved in the video. There’s multiple ways of telling those stories, and you know, if I do my job correctly I should be able to tell those stories every time and have it be fresh and unique because there’s so many different parts of relationships.

Samira Wiley’s new YouTube Red show is slaying in all senses of the word. Wiley plays the no nonsense Detective Jessica Mathers in Ryan Hansen Solves Crimes on Television, which premiered on the YouTube’s original programming channel Red last week.

The Emmy-nominated actress seems to have a penchant for bringing her talent to streaming platforms trying to ramp up their original content. She made waves early on in Orange is the New Black and put Hulu original series on the map with The Handmaid’s Tale, so it’s no wonder YouTube snagged her for its new series.

Wiley seems to be having a blast with this show, promoting it enthusiastically on her Twitter and Instagram pages.

She also informed fans that the first couple of episodes can be streamed for free, so hurry up and get your hands on them if you don’t have a subscription to YouTube Red. Feel free to send me your username and password if you decide to sign up. Sharing is caring.

Also, I’m not sure why none of you told me, but Wiley and her wife were featured with their home in AD Magazine, so here are those swoon-worthy photos. In other screen news, The CW has cast another queer character for its superhero series Black Lightning.

Chantal Thuy has been cast as Grace Choi, recurring character, comic book superfan and love interest of Anissa Pierce. Black Lightning will follow the story of the Outsiders, a group of meta humans pulled together by Batman to continue the work of the Justice League.

Check out the first look for the show:

And finally, before I bid you goodbye for this first glorious, crisp week of November, we can’t part without marveling at one of our favorite lesbian couples and how they absolutely crushed Halloween together.

See you next time, lady loves!
