ADVOCATES: The No Gayngst LGBT Web Series with Attitude

on

Tired of seeing all the “queer as tropes” on your t.v. every week?  Sick to death of watching your favorite characters get killed off  in every show with a lesbian storyline? Annoyed with gay roles that were written by clueless straight people? Well, then, you’re in for a treat.

In 2017, get ready for Chloe Curran’s bold new web series, ADVOCATES. Set to be released this spring, the series is a satirical comedy with the tagline “No Angst. Just Attitude.” You won’t find any “gayngst” here at all, which is the gay angst Curran affirms she was ready to be done with in first conceiving the show. After all, we have moved past the gay shame by now, haven’t we?

“No Angst. Just Attitude.”

This series isn’t for the faint of heart, or for those seeking careful, PC-sensitive comedy. Nothing is sacred in ADVOCATES,  because let’s be real – sometimes we just need to laugh at ourselves. According to Curran, who created, writes, and co-directs the series with co-director Lauren Neal,  “The queer community is triumphant and absurd, empowering and occasionally perilous. It is beautiful and fierce and filled with debate and disagreement. That’s what makes it so fun. I didn’t want to write about perfect people overcoming hate in the face of all odds. That’s a cool story, but it’s been told. ADVOCATES’ gay characters are comfortable enough in their own skin to make fun of themselves.”

I have already laughed out loud from the trailer alone, especially the sketch on celebrities coming out –  “A hard 1 on the Kinsey scale” sounds familiar in our current climate. And then there is the asterisk after the acronym GULPTAB* (the  fictional Gay Unidentified Lesbian Pansexual Transgender Asexual Bisexual nonprofit) that is used to represent “literally every identity,”  taking a jab at the politics that sometimes overshadows the original issues that began the LGBT movement.

What we have to look forward to with ADVOCATES is a series that is funny, smart, fearless, and written by one of us,  for us.  What more could we ask for?

Stay tuned because the pilot is coming this spring, and we will air every new episode right here on AfterEllen! In the meantime, you can read the full description of the show on the ADVOCATES website, and follow on Facebook and Instagram for updates and sneak peaks.
