Pop culture and entertainment site Fusion released an important video today about queer women and sexual health care. In a not so shocking but disappointing trend, queer, trans, non-binary and genderqueer persons with vaginas are not getting the sexual health care that they should. Safe sex, STDs, and overall health simply are not addressed in the same way as they are with cisgender heterosexual women.
I can recall a few occasions with new doctors where my sexual health needs were dismissed or diminished, from either a lack of knowledge or empathy. One of the women in the video recalls a time where a nurse couldn’t believe she wasn’t using birth control or condoms, and I have been in the exact same situations, as I’m sure many of you have as well.
This video brings up some excellent points, and serves as a good reminder that sometimes we have to stand up for our own health. Maybe if enough of us do, it will bring about some real change.
