Morning Brew – Wed. May 15: Minnesota Makes Marriage Equality Official, Michelle Chamuel Advances to the Top Ten on “The Voice”

Good morning, Brewbies! Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton held a ceremony on the south steps of the Capitol yesterday afternoon where he officially signed marriage equality into law. He told the cheering crowd: “What a day for Minnesota, and what a difference a year and election can make in our states. Last year there were concerns that marriage equality would be banned here forever. Now my signature will make it legal in two and a half months.” What encouraging words for those of us in the 38 states that are still making the slow crawl toward equality!

It was a tense half hour for lesbian viewers of The Voice last night, but after we held our breathes until we turned purple, we found out that out contestant Michelle Chamuel moved safely into the Top Ten! I mean, how could she not? Her performance of “Call Your Girlfriend” on Monday night was kick-ass beyond measure! Also, I loved the time-traveling lesbian blazer/tie combo she wore for the elimination round.

Openly gay New York mayoral candidate Christine Quinn spoke to the New York Times about her past struggles with alcoholism and an eating disorder. From the article:

In college, her life was split in two. She was a social butterfly and a joker who sometimes dressed in a chicken suit to play the school’s mascot, the Bantam, at football games, and a prominent political activist, protesting recruitment on campus for the Central Intelligence Agency and apartheid in South Africa. At the same time, she struggled with waves of sadness. She would go to class and dutifully take down what the professor said, then go back to her room and find her notes incomprehensible. She would get drunk at parties and campus bars. She developed a crush on an older female student, but she tried to ignore her feelings […] “I want to be affirmatively proud of what I have made my way through,” she said. “And to do that, in the same way I had to tell my father and my family and my friends that I was gay, I need to not hide this anymore.”

Here’s a doozy of a political headline from New York Magazine‘s Daily Intel blog: Hillary Clinton Will Admit to Being a Lesbian in Book, According to News Outlet That Got One Story Right One Time. Yeaaaah, that newspaper of international repute, The National Enquirer, says that Clinton is going to come out as a lesbian or bisexual lady in her newest memoir. According to a “family insider”: “a veterinarian who treated the family cat Socks at the White House stumbled upon her locked in a steamy embrace with a woman.” What’s actually most unbelievable about this whole story is that Clinton has penned another memoir, apparently while she was traveling around the world more than any other Secretary of State in history! I’m actually really glad this rumor surfaced because I’ve been dying for a place to showcase these women talking about how their bodies are ready for Hillary.

A big thanks to Lucy Hallowell for this tip about The Fosters: Sam McMurray has joined the cast as Terri Polo‘s character’s dad. Apparently, he’s “gruff but lovable,” the second part of which I find hard to believe since he’s apparently got big problems with his daughter’s lesbianism.

And finally, are you looking for new ways to ship Marceline and Princess Bubblegum? Well, here’s some good news for you: Cartoon Network has announced a brand new Adventure Time game for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC, Nintendo 3DS, and even Wii U! The game is called “Adventure Time: Explore the Dungeon Because I DON’T KNOW!” And that pretty much tells you everything you need to know.
