Florence Welch, JD Samson and Nina Sky sing for the HRC

On Saturday The Real L Word‘s Amanda Leigh Dunn hosted a benefit concert for the Human Rights Campaign and the Ali Forney Center at Manhattan music hall Le Poisson Rouge. Boasting a lineup of queer and queer friendly bands, the event brought a lesbian-leaning crowd to the intimate venue. Nina Sky, Light Asylum, CREEP and JD Samson‘s MEN were among the long list of performers. MEN did “Let Them Out or Let Me In,” a song written in support of imprisoned Russian band Pussy Riot, and five or six women dressed as Pussy Riot members stormed the stage and jumped around, fists raised.

The big news of the night, though, was Florence Welch of Florence and the Machine, who took the stage unannounced. Even Dunn was surprised. “We didn’t know she was showing up!” she told me. Florence covered an Icona Pop song “I Love It” to the awestruck crowd.
