The AfterEllen.com Huddle: Girl Gangs

Growing up, who didn’t want to be a part of a girl gang? Whether it was part of The Babysitters’ Club or hanging with the Foxfire crew, anytime there was a pack of women together doing fun shit, we wanted to be involved! Maybe you went as far as to share some spit and a handshake with your new blood sisters or tried to start a female singing group complete with choreography and original songs (just me?), there’s some sort of magic that comes from a gaggle of girls getting together and creating some kind of mischief.

OK guys! Who is your favorite girl gang?

Bridget McManus: The ladies of SNL circa 2008, comedic geniuses Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Maya Rudolph and Kristen Wiig.

Karman Kregloe: In honor of Divine‘s birthday today, I have to choose her film Female Trouble (dir. John Waters, 1974) as being my favorite portrayal of a girl gang. Dawn Davenport (Divine) and her friends Chicklette and Concetta are petty thieves who dress like glamorously trashy 1960s widows and steal other peoples crap. Hell, I’d probably join a gang if the leader’s mantra was “I’m a thief and a shitkicker and I’d like to be famous.”

Grace Chu: D.E.B.S.

Trish Bendix: Set it Off will forever be one of my favorite films about women working together, even though they are up to no good. I’d like to think that if I were ever down and out enough, that my friends and I could pull off some bank robberies together like Queen Latifah, Vivica A. Fox, Jada Pinkett Smith and Kimberly Elise did. In reality, I’d probably be Ursula (Samantha MacLachlan) with my Cleo making it rain on me.

Dana Piccoli: Mine would definitely be Jem and the Holograms (Jem, Kimber, Aja and Shana). Big hair, even bigger dreams. Plus who could forget their opening theme! Now if only I could get my hand on a pair of those damn earrings. Truly outrageous.

Dorothy Snarker: Definitely the Heathers, because they were the original Mean Girls.

Emily Hartl: I spent a lot of time watching and researching The Craft as a young lady. My neighbor Christina used to dress up like Fairuza Balk and call me to tell me to come outside so I could watch her stalk down the block with way too much eyeliner on, totally in character. #DIT

Dara Nai: My favorite girl gang is my real life gang of friends. They’re all talented, smart, funny and exceptionally creative, but more importantly, they’re totally genuine, ridiculously supportive and practically drama-free. In Hollywood! Who knew?!

Lucy Hallowell: The unholy trinity.

Marcie Bianco: The girls from Teen Girl Squad. “SOOOO GROOOD!”

Jill Guccini: While I’m jealous Marcie already came up with the best answer, I have to go with the second best girl gang, The Golden Girls. Funnier AND dirtier than the Sex and the City crew. I don’t know why I just randomly chose Sex and the City to compare them to, but I’ll take a cheesecake over Manolo Blahniks any day, thank you! And they are OH SO GAY. And so ahead of their time! SWOON. I just completely block out of my brain any personal disputes the ladies had offscreen or the fact that most of them are now dead. In my heart, the Golden Girls live FOREVER.

Ali Davis: I’m going with the Lizzies from The Warriors. The chicks are packed!

Elaine Atwell: I would sell my soul to be a vampire slayer (although I guess selling it would make me a vampire). But, especially in the Buffy comics, it’s like being in the best army ever, where everyone speaks in witty dialogue and is, if not actually gay, at least open to suggestion.

The Linster: My new favorite is the a cappella gang, the Bellas, from Pitch Perfect. Why didn’t Santana Lopez go to Barden College?
