Gay women of the universe, your crush on Megan Rapinoe just got even bigger. The U.S. Women’s National Team soccer star has come out to, appropriately, OUT magazine. While the 27-year-old hasn’t necessarily hidden her sexuality and was for all intents and purposes out, she has never said the worlds officially to the press, until now. As she told OUT:
I know, I know – it’s been a good week to be gay. First Anderson Cooper and now Megan. The midfielder will go for the gold later this month as part of the U.S. Olympic team in London. With her statement she joins past player Natasha Kai and coach Pia Sundhage as out and proud members of the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team.
Known for her killer crosses (one in overtime to Abby Wambach during the World Cup last year helped Team USA tie Brazil and send the game to penalty kicks) and fabulous crop of short blonde hair (which has its own T-shirt and Twitter account), Rapinoe has long been a favorite among soccer fans and gay women for her infectious attitude and intense play.
Rapinoe spoke with OUT about homophobia in sports.
Though in news that will surely solicit disappointed awws from lesbians everywhere, OUT reports that Rapinoe has been dating Australian soccer player Sarah Walsh for three years. Still, she’s not above admitting her own celebrity crush and possible hairpiration.
So, welcome, officially to the team, Megan. We’ll be cheering even louder now for you in London for sure.
