Morning Brew – Mon. June 25: “Brave” heroine Merida could be gay, Ellen and Jane Lynch on the Walk of Fame

Good morning! I had a great time at Seattle Pride over the weekend. I hope you all were able to enjoy some Prideful events this month.

Mary Cheney married longtime partner Heather Poe last week in Washington and the Cheney family says they couldn’t be happier. Lesbians: We’re in every family, so get used to it.

Swedish skiing star Anja Paerson came out as a lesbian officially by announcing she and her partner Fillipa are having a baby. Anja told a radio show:

I am tired of being someone else and of playing a game. I owe it to myself and especially to Filippa to tell the truth. I had never intended to fall in love with a woman. Never thought that my heart could beat so fast for a woman. I was insanely in love.

And now she’s pregs! Congrats Anja.

Soon you’ll be able to put your hands where two of the world’s best blonde lesbian comics have been. Both Ellen DeGeneres and Jane Lynch are getting stars on the Walk of Fame in 2013. Well deserved!

Speaking of Jane, she recently got a VIP tour of the White House. She’s hosting a fundraiser for President Obama soon so she was able to check out his digs and meet his dog, Bo. Here’s Jane with wife Lara and their daughter as they take pics of the President on the South Lawn.

The New York Times profiled Tig Notaro and her brand of “repetitive comedy.” I always wondered what Taylor Dayne thought of Tig’s oft-repeated joke about her. It looks like she was recently in on the joke.

EW wonders if Brave‘s heroine Merida could be gay.

But it’s quite possible that while watching Brave’s tomboyish heroine shoot arrows, fight like one of the boys, and squirm when her mother puts her in girly clothes, a thought might pop into the head of some viewers: Is Merida gay? Let’s be clear: Merida isn’t an overtly lesbian character. Nothing in the story implies that she’s attracted to other women (or men either, but more on that in a second). She doesn’t completely swear off the idea of marriage to a man, and she never hints that she might have a hidden sexual identity. And neither Pixar, which created her, or Disney, which is distributing the film, has made any official attempt to tell the gay community that Merida might be one of them; we definitely won’t be seeing any giant, inflatable Scottish princesses hovering over floats at today’s Pride parades.

But, the writer notes, she’s not boy crazy and she’s not into “princess-like hobbies” or anything else that’s part of fulfilling typical gender roles. So, it appears, Merida may be gay, but she’s definitely a way cool character.

Jillian Michaels and Heidi Rhoades attended LG’s Day Of Good Clean Fun with their children. Cute.
