Bridal porn alert: Designers sent their newest gowns down the runways last week at New York Bridal Fashion Week. The Spring 2013 collections have a lot of uber-feminine touches — tons of lace, plunging backs with intricate details and subtle polka dots. There’s also a lot of high drama in the form of massive ball gowns, oversized bow details that I absolutely love, and even show-stopping red gowns.
I’ve spent the last several days scouring the Internet and have gathered some of my favorite new looks just for you. Enjoy!
Bold brides who don’t see envision themselves getting married in white will love Vera Wang’s new line of red dresses. The gowns range in color from fire-engine red to crimson, and they are all seriously stunning. If you love the styles, but aren’t ready for red, I’ve heard that the gowns will also be available in white and ivory. My favorite is this romantic ball gown with tulle panels in deep red (bonus points to the bride who can pull off messy pigtails on her wedding day). Also note the structured corsette bodice — another hot trend for 2013.
Christos gave Facebook fans a glimpse into how gowns go from sketch to three-dimensional dress. I think this “Peony” gown has just enough shimmer for a sophisticated evening wedding.
The moment Michelle Williams appeared at the Oscars wearing that gorgeous red peplum dress, I knew that it would only be a matter of time before we saw the look replicated in wedding dresses.
It took me a while to warm up to the idea of adding extra fabric around the hips (a place where most of us don’t need any extra fabric), but a peplum can actually make a very sleek and sophisticated addition to a wedding dress. I have to believe a lesbian was the inspiration for this Theia pantsuit. The lace makes it feminine and the tie gives it a masculine edge — perfect for the gay girl who feels most comfortable smack dab in the middle of the butch/femme spectrum.
There are so many ways to incorporate a little “something blue” into your wedding day look. You could wear some sapphire bling or paint your nails blue. Or, knock out your something new and your something blue in one shot by wearing this darling Oscar de la Renta sweetheart gown made of blue tulle with a white trompe l’oeil overlay. I picture this dress at an elegant daytime wedding in the spring.
Make a grand entrance and a memorable exit in this Kenneth Pool “Paris” gown, which incorporates a number of this season’s trends. It’s got layers and layers of tulle, dramatic embellishments and a stunning rear view.
I’m glad to see little white dresses are still making their way down the runway. I love LWDs because they let you show off your legs and still look like a bride without being weighed down by a full-length dress. But more importantly, I think they serve a special purpose for lesbian brides, many of whom might want two dresses: one to wear when we get legally married at some out-of-state courthouse and another for our hometown wedding receptions. I plan to legally tie the knot in the LWD I wore to my engagement party — because the extravagant ball gown I’ll wear to my actual (albeit illegal) wedding probably won’t travel well and definitely wouldn’t make much sense in a courthouse. I’m still angry as hell that I can’t just have one wedding because I can’t legally get married in the state where I live. But, if I have to be a second class citizen, I’m going to do it in style (and use it as an excuse to buy two wedding dresses).
