When only four percent of scripted TV shows feature LGBT characters, what’s a gay girl to do? Why, strap on your gay goggles and watch TV along with us, of course! Our handy appraisal scale is better than any old letter grade. Other sites A+. We say, “What about our lezzy-lady feelings?”
This week was mid-season finale time on The Secret Circle and we got one hex of a cliffhanger. And with it, a new dimension to the power of The Circle. Too bad we won’t get to know exactly what it all means until after the holidays. Merry Witchmas, everybody.
This episode covered a lot of ground, story-wise, with little time for girl/girl subtext. All we got was a few brief moments of budding intimacy between Diana and Cassie. Diana did say that since she’s been single, she’s felt empowered. So, OK — a tiny bit of lesbian subtext.
FEELINGS, FEELINGS, FEELINGS!
You know, for a group of folks calling themselves True Believers, those dudes don’t really seem to be filled with the love of Jesus. But once Jake tells Issac that Cassie is part of the Balcoin lineage that originated dark magic, he backs off big-time. Yes, I’m as confused as you are. Everybody knows dark magic originated with Voldemort.
Ever the vigilant stalker, Adam figures out that Jerk’s a witch-hunter and gets The Circle together to save Cassie from being kidnapped by the TBs, who want to use her evil power for good. It’s dramatic and foolish and scary and sweet at the same time — everything we love about this show and CW in general. But the No. 1 feeling comes after all of that: a huge “WTF?” when Issac reveals that Cassie is not the only circle member with dark magic. John Blackwell has another child! (Cue eerie music.)
MOMENTS OF FAYE
Faye’s not herself — finding your grandpa’s cold, dead body tends to do that to a girl. She goes to Mama Dawn for a little TLC and Dawn has the perfect solution: Go to a party! Good move, Mom.
Still, our favorite b-witch’s Faye-dar is right on despite her pain. She knows Jerk is up to no good. “He’s too curious … too interested. Jake doesn’t do interested. He’s after something.” We know she has to be pretty committed to protecting her GF Cassie if she deigns to get one-on-one with Adam. Nothing motivates a girl like love for a good woman.
Another member of The Secret Circle with dark magic? Who could it be? All signs point to Faye, since we know her mom had a thing for John Blackwell. Part of me hopes that’s true, because we’d have so much fun watching Faye as she realizes she can do solo magic. But the other part of me hopes it’s someone else so we can watch Faye being jealous and snarky about Cassie’s power. Besides, their being sisters would totally ruin Chamberlake. If binding the circle indeed binds the entire families of its members, then we may not have even met the other dark witch yet. Really, it could be anyone.
We’re left with plenty of questions. Can Charles reverse the botched spell on Jane? Will he get so sick of Dawn that he decks her? (Yes, please.) Is Jake turning into a Good Witch? What’s up with Melissa’s cousin Holden? In fact, what’s up with Melissa? Time to bring her mojo back; I miss her. (Maybe that’s what Maya, er, Bianca Lawson will bring with her to Chance Harbor.) Why doesn’t The Secret Circle use its power to provide protection for the members and stop people from messing with them? Why doesn’t Cassie ever close her bedroom curtains?
What did you think of this episode? Do you think Faye and Cassie are half-sisters? Any predictions for the rest of the season?
