Gay Girl’s Goggles: “Secret Circle” SnapCap (1.03)

When only four percent of scripted TV shows feature LGBT characters, what’s a gay girl to do? Why, strap on your gay goggles and watch TV along with us, of course! Our handy appraisal scale is better than any old letter grade. Other sites A+. We say, “What about our lezzy-lady feelings?”

Every CW show must, by definition, have a school dance saga — and this was that episode of The Secret Circle. At least we heard a little Adele in the process. Meanwhile, the Circle is bound, the witches are witching and the parents are being snoopy sneaky. Everybody dance now!

AFTERELLEN BAIT

Wow, what a waste of hot girls. We got no underwear shots. We got no long, slow shots of women walking away. And we got way too much Heterosexual Teenage Tension — great for a band name, but not so great for lesbian fantasy fodder. Good thing we got this.

FEELINGS, FEELINGS, FEELINGS

You know that feeling you get when you just want the world to go away and for all the witchy witches to just leave you the frak alone? That’s how Cassie feels. But nobody cares, because she’s bound to the Circle and nothing hurts. Or everything hurts. In shows so full of teen angst, it all feels the same. Faye’s main feeling, though, is royally pissed off because she can’t do magic on her own anymore so she actually has to open her own locker and use a match to light a candle. She makes Sidekick Melissa practice iPhone telekinesis with her, but she’s still not going to get a call from poor Grandpa Henry.

FLASHES OF FAYE

Not only can Faye not do magic on her own anymore, Cassie’s recently resurrected friend Sally sort of remembers that Faye gave her an evil b-witchy stare before she fell to her un-death. She calls these memories “flashes of Faye.” Which actually would be quite pleasant for most of us.

We did see a different side of Faye this week. After watching Nick be a dick to her sidekick, she tells him to treat Melissa right or get lost. And when he does, she’s happy. Faye’s heart still beats after all. And that little touch of humanity makes her even more irresistible.

SCARY HAIRY MEN

The creep of the week is Zachary Larson, an unshaven mystery man who recognizes Cassie because he knew her mom Amelia and all of her secrets, including why she left Chance Harbor. He vows to never let it happen again. Too bad the only way to do that is to kill a member of the Circle. And too bad that Zach doesn’t remember that trying to kill a witch isn’t the way to ensure a happy future.

The Circle comes together just in time to save Cassie and Principal Mom comes along just in time to cover up the damage. But the witches couldn’t be bothered with using their power to take care of the mess they made during their power surge. Argus Filch would’ve had those kids hanging from the ceiling until they learned to clean up after themselves.
