Gabourey Sidibe tackles “The Big C,” bigger critics

It’s Showtime for Gabourey Sidibe. The Academy Award-nominated star of Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire has signed on as a recurring character in the new Showtime series The Big C alongside Laura Linney.

The half-hour show, which has already been picked up for a full 13-episode season order, follows Linney’s character Cathy, a suburban wife and teacher whose reassesses her life when she is diagnosed with cancer. Gabby will play a “smart-alecky” student in Cathy’s class.

According to the official release, she 26-year-old actress has already shot the pilot for the series. No word on how many episodes she will be in yet. The series will begin shooting in May and premiere later in the summer.

I’d say this is a good fit for Gabby. While Precious showed off her mettle, she can show off her funny side a bit more in this dark comedy. Anyone who has read or seen any interviews with the actress knows she has a fun, smart, effervescent personality.

It also shuts up idiots like Howard Stern who, like many a bottom-feeder, sought to make headlines by slamming Gabby on his satellite radio show Monday. He said she would did not have a future in Hollywood and was “never going to be in another movie” because of her size. Wrong and wrong. Beside The Big C, Gabby also recently wrapped filming on her next film, Yelling to the Sky, with Zoe Kravitz. It should hit the festival circuit later this year.

I’d say the future looks bright for Ms. Sidibe. And the Sterns of the world can suck it.
