First trailer for “Defiance” shows a whole new Earth with some of our favorite leading ladies

Darla and HG and Jenny, oh my! Fans of science fiction, post-apocalyptic universes, big aliens, bigger explosions, Julie Benz, Jaime Murray and Mia Kirshner got their first taste of the much-anticipated new series Defiance this week. Syfy released the first trailer for the new TV series which premieres April 2013. Take a look. The results are supposed to depict Earth nine years after the aliens arrived and created “something new.” The results look a little like Firefly minus the horses and The Fifth Element minus Bruce Willis. The series is set in the new city of Defiance, which appears to be what’s left of St. Louis.

What the first trailer also gives us is the first glimpse of some of our favorite actresses back in action. There’s Benz, the artist formerly known as Darla (and Rita, and the lesbian stripper). She plays Amanda Rosewater, the mayor of Defiance. Next there’s Murray, the artist currently also known as H.G., who plays Stahma Tarr. She is an upper-class alien and the wife of a chief adviser Mayor Rosewater’s. Also, she’s really, really, really pale. Finally there’s Kirshner — you know, Jenny — who plays Kenya, the town madam. Looks like she still takes clients, too. Rounding out the cast are Grant Bowler as Jeb Nolan, the chief lawman of Defiance, Stephanie Leonidas as Irisa, a different — read more colorful, i.e. Hello, ginger! — species of alien and Nolan’s deputy, and Graham Greene as Rafe McCawley, the owner of the largest mine in the territory.

The 30-second spot doesn’t give us too much information, but it does set up a gritty new vision of Earth where humans and aliens live side-by-side. So, what do you think? Excited for April 2013? Weirded out by pale Jaime? Yeah, me too.
