“Face Off” Mini-Cap (7.4): They are Groot

Look at this bunch of tree huggers. This week on Face Off, contestants had both Foundation and Spotlight rounds for a change. While I think they wasted the build-your-own superhero challenge on the shorter Spotlight Challenge, I quite enjoyed the Groot-like larger Foundation Challenge. Also, I agreed with their selection of Rachel’s alien superhero assassin to take immunity for the week. Or I guess I did, they never show enough of the make-ups on Spotlight Challenges to really tell.

THE CHALLENGE:

Build your own tree! We are all Ents! Or Groots!

THE TWIST:

All the trees have some sort of evil, destructive component built into the design. Think bugs or lightening or vines. Fine, it’s not much of a twist.

THE GOOD:

Doc and Jason’s pine tree struck by lightening had a gorgeous, gorgeous face sculpt. It was elegant and expressive. I can’t even think of a good joke, it was that pretty.

THE BAD:

Vince and Damien’s tree stump monstrosity looked like something out of a cheesy 80s Halloween movie. Like is he BFFs with Leprechaun?

THE RANDOM:

Cheesy tree stump head aside, I think the caliber of work so far this season has been really high. Just a random thought for the Random category.

THE WTF WERE THEY THINKING:

Cig and Drew made an anemic looking weeping willow that, even though there was a tree-limb malfunction (which, WTF, model?! — way to not be a team player), was oddly unimpressive.

THE GAY:

Stella, with her partner Sasha, had another exceptional week this time creating a convincingly sorrowful white birch creature complete with burls. The only problem? Those boxing glove hands, which Stella was skeptical about from the start. Good instinct, he’s not Tree Tyson.

Hey, keep on posting tweetbians. Stella won this week’s Fan Favorite Tweet Off, so let’s keep it going and give this lady the $10,000. If she wins, she can buy us a beer or something. Hint, hint.
