Fabulous in the countryside

If you love Absolutely Fabulous (and if you don’t, what’s wrong with you?), be sure to tune in to BBC America tonight at 9 p.m. (ET) for the U.S. premiere of Clatterford. The series was created by Jennifer Saunders (Edina on AbFab) and stars Saunders, her longtime creative soulmate Dawn French, and yes, Joanna Lumley (Patsy on AbFab). It’s set in a women’s club in the English countryside. If that sounds a little like Calendar Girls, it should — that movie was one of Saunders’ main inspirations for the series.

For more, read the great article in the New York Times. It opens with an anecdote about the time Saunders met Sharon Gless.

In honor of the moment Ms. Saunders offered the entertainment equivalent of a tip of the hat. She pitched a project to Ms. Gless: “Cagney and Lacey: The Movie.”
“I thought: How come they’ve made ‘Starsky and Hutch’? How come they’ve made ‘Miami Vice’? ‘Cagney and Lacey’ was the most interesting.”
Too right, Jennifer. Eddie would be proud.
