So say you’re having a party. And say you’re using your iPod for party music. And say you have your iPod on shuffle. And say while on shuffle it lands on a particularly embarrassing song. A song like, say, “Mmm Bop.” Or “Achy Breaky Heart.” Or anything by Nickelback. Not that this has ever happened to me. It was a friend.
But my friend shouldn’t feel embarrassed. Because we all have guilty pleasure songs. Even Lady Gaga has them. Her guilty pleasure? Taylor Swift. Yes, Mama Monster loves the Fairytale Princess. Crazy, I know. But when asked recently to name an embarrassing song she loved, her answer:
That Taylor Swift song? “You Belong With Me”? Oh my God! When it comes on the radio, I sing it so loud.
Yes, world. Lady Gaga sings Taylor Swift at the top of her lungs in the car. She’s just like us. Except for the 10-inch stilettos, fake blood and architectural headgear. Now, relax Taylorites (or is it Swifties?). Gaga made sure to explain she wasn’t bagging on Ms. Swift with her selection. She said it’s “a great song” and her embarrassment comes from singing “so freely” and “so loud,” when she hears her. “It’s very whimsical in a way that I’m not necessarily whimsical every day.” Whimsical? No. Growly? Yes.
So, of course, we can’t leave the lady hanging. I feel it’s only fair that we share the most embarrassing, or should be say whimsical, songs we secretly love. I asked a few of my blogging friends to admit their guilty pleasures.
Lesley Goldberg: Hanson, “Mmm Bop”
See, I told you it wasn’t me.
Mia Jones: Lady Antebellum, “Need You Now.”
She calls this her Sheryl Crow/Kid Rock “Picture” of 2010.
TheLinster: Wham, “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go.” If you are ever to encounter TheLinster near a jukebox, be prepared to sing the chorus.
So now, as a show of good faith, here is mine. Every time Ke$ha’s “Your Love is My Drug” comes on in the car, I sing along because I feel so — what did Lady Gaga call it? — whimsical. And, no, I still can’t justify that dumb dollar sign.
So, your turn — spill it: What song puts you to shame on your shuffle? If Lady Gaga can do it, so can you.
