Emmy nominations produce surprises, snubs and just a little “Glee”

Welcome to the annual game of who wants to win a winged pointy golden girl! The Emmy nominations were announced this morning and they featured some familiar favorites (Glee! The Good Wife! 30 Rock!) some worthy newcomers (Parks & Recreation! Game of Thrones! Friday Night Lights!). So let’s take a look at the deserving and surprising, and, of course, the snubbed.

OUTSTANDING DRAMA SERIES

Boardwalk Empire

Dexter

Friday Night Lights

Game of Thrones

The Good Wife

Mad Men

OUTSTANDING COMEDY SERIES

The Big Bang Theory

Glee

Modern Family

The Office

Parks & Recreation

30 Rock

The only thing I see here is Parks & Recreation’s first and very deserved nomination. OK, just kidding. Big kudos to long-adored, little-recognized Friday Night Lights. And, my inner Gleek and Feyminist loves the Glee and 30 Rock nods. Left off? Community, True Blood, The Waking Dead, Fringe – I could go on.

LEAD ACTRESS, DRAMA

Kathy Bates – Harry’s Law

Connie Britton – Friday Night Lights

Mireille Enos – The Killing

Mariska Hargitay – Law & Order: SVU

Julianna Marguiles – The Good Wife

Elisabeth Moss – Mad Men

LEAD ACTOR, DRAMA

Steve Buscemi – Boardwalk Empire
Kyle Chandler – Friday Night Lights
Michael C. Hall – Dexter
John Hamm – Mad Men
Hugh Laurie – House
Timothy Olyphant – Justified

Interesting to see Mireille Enos make the cut after her series, The Killing, went from critical darling to critical kicking bag in its first season. Also, interesting to see new faces crowd out last year’s winner, Kyra Sedgwick. For the fellas, so happy to see Timothy Olyphant get his due as the man in the white hat.

LEAD ACTRESS, COMEDY

Edie Falco – Nurse Jackie

Tina Fey – 30 Rock

Laura Linney – The Big C

Melissa McCarthy – Mike & Molly

Martha Plimpton – Raising Hope

Amy Poehler – Parks & Recreation

LEAD ACTOR, COMEDY

Alec Baldwin – 30 Rock

Louis CK – Louie

Steve Carell – The Office

Johnny Galecki – The Big Bang Theory

Matt LeBlanc – Episodes

Jim Parsons – The Big Bang Theory

Good news: Tina Fey and Amy Poehler are together where they belong, as Emmy nominees. Surprising news: Melissa McCarthy gets a nod for a show few critics give the time of day – but since I loved her so much in Bridesmaids, I’m nothing but happy for her. (Plus, as one of the Emmy nominations announcers this morning, it was adorable to get her reaction live.) Snubbed news: No Lea Michele for Glee, I repeat, NO LEA MICHELE FOR GLEE.

SUPPORTING ACTRESS, DRAMA

Kelly McDonald – Boardwalk Empire

Christina Hendricks – Mad Men

Michelle Forbes – The Killing

Archie Panjabi – The Good Wife

Margo Martindale – Justified

Christine Baranski – The Good Wife

SUPPORTING ACTOR, DRAMA

John Slattery – Mad Men
Andre Braugher – Men of a Certain Age
Walton Goggins – Justified
Peter Dinklage – Game of Thrones
Josh Charles – The Good Wife
Alan Cumming – The Good Wife

Good looking best supporting actress category there, plus Archie Panjabi is the only actress playing a lesbian or bisexual character to be nominated this year.

SUPPORTING ACTRESS, COMEDY

Jane Lynch – Glee
Betty White – Hot in Cleveland
Julie Bowen – Modern Family
Kristen Wiig – Saturday Night Live
Jane Krakowski – 30 Rock
Sofia Vergara – Modern Family

SUPPORTING ACTOR, COMEDY

Jon Cryer – Two and a Half Men
Chris Colfer – Glee
Jesse Tyler Ferguson – Modern Family
Ed O’Neill – Modern Family
Eric Stonestreet – Modern Family
Ty Burrell – Modern Family

I want to hug all the women in the comedy category with my legs in friendship. Big kudos to Jane Lynch for her nod as the only out lesbian or bisexual woman to be honored this year. Though would a nomination for Naya Rivera have killed the Academy? Santana’s role was bigger than Sue’s this season, and more complex. And no love for perennial nominee Neil Patrick Harris this year? Though, it is these are the only major categories with out nominees in Lynch, Colfer and Ferguson. Oh, and stop nominating Jon Cryer. That is all.

LEAD ACTRESS MINISERIES OR MOVIE

Kate Winslet – Mildred Pierce

Elizabeth McGovern – Downton Abbey

Diane Lane – Cinema Verite

Taraji P. Henson – Taken From Me: The Tiffany Rubin Story

Jean Marsh – Upstairs Downstairs

LEAD ACTOR, MINISERIES OR MOVIE

Greg Kinnear – The Kennedys

Barry Pepper – The Kennedys

Edgar Ramirez – Carlos

William Hurt – Too Big To Fail

Idris Elba – Luther

Laurence Fishburne – Thurgood

Kate Winslet will be at the awards this year — nicely done, Academy. Also, those nominations for The Kennedys are a shocker since pretty much no network wanted to air the series.

GUEST ACTRESS IN A COMEDY

Kristin Chenoweth – Glee

Dot-Marie Jones – Glee

Gwyenth Paltrow – Glee

Cloris Leachman – Raising Hope

Tina Fey – Saturday Night Live

Elizabeth Banks – 30 Rock

GUEST ACTOR IN A COMEDY

Idris Elba – The Big C

Nathan Lane – Modern Family

Zach Galifianakis – Saturday Night Live

Justin Timberlake – Saturday Night Live

Matt Damon – 30 Rock

Will Arnett – 30 Rock

Cheno! Gwynnie! Dot! Glee kind of crushed this category, and rightfully so. Don’t worry, I see you there, too, Tina.

GUEST ACTRESS IN A DRAMA

Mary McDonnell – The Closer

Julia Stiles – Dexter

Loretta Devine – Grey’s Anatomy

Randee Heller – Mad Men

Cara Buono – Mad Men

GUEST ACTOR IN A DRAMA

Bruce Dern – Big Love

Beau Bridges – Brothers & Sisters

Michael J. Fox – The Good Wife

Hey, Julia Stiles, you’ve come a long way since 10 Things I Hate About You.
