Emma Stone to take on “Spider-Man”

Did Easy A make you want to see more of Emma Stone?

OK, that didn’t come out right. All the same, Stone’s career is taking off (oops) and we just learned that she’s been cast as Gwen Stacy in the 3-D Spider-Man movie – dashing Bryce Dallas Howard’s hopes that she would continue the role she played in Spider-Man 3. Stone has been rumored to be part of the project for months – in the role of Mary Jane Watson. But director Marc Webb said the chemistry between Stone and new Spidey Andrew Garfield was “stunning,” making her the clear choice to play Gwen. That leaves us without someone to take Kirsten Dunst‘s place as Mary Jane. Rumored contenders include Dianna Agron (Glee) and Mia Wasikowska (The Kids Are All Right), neither of whom feels exactly right to me. Of course, neither did Dunst. But I’m wondering if Mary Jane even will be in this version, since the story focuses on Peter Parker’s younger years, when Gwen was his first love. According to the studio, the film’s villain will not be the Green Goblin, who killed Gwen in the comics, so the role might extend beyond one film, depending on the storyline and the movie’s box office success. What are your thoughts on this latest development? Will Emma Stone make a good Gwen Stacy? Who would be a worthy Mary Jane?
