Eliza Dushku lends her voice to “Torchwood”

If you follow the most excellent TV writer @JaneEspenson (and if you don’t, why not?), this news won’t surprise you. A few weeks ago, Espenson, who’s a writer for the upcoming Torchwood series revealed some news – along with a couple of teasers – via Twitter.

Yes, fans of Eliza Dushku knew who Espenson was tweeting about, but Thursday we finally got the official word via Entertainment Weekly: Dushku will star in Torchwood: Web of Lies, an online animated motion comic based on Torchwood: Miracle Day.

Of course, since Web of Lies is animated, Dushku’s voice is the actual star, with her comic form performing onscreen. Torchwood stars John Barrowman (Capt. Jack Harkness) and Eve Myles (Gwen Cooper) will also lend their voices to the series.

Produced by BBC Worldwide, Web of Lies will have 10 three-minute webisodes, the first of which will go online before Torchwood premieres on Starz July 8. Subsequent episodes will appear after each Miracle Day ep.

In case you’ve never seen a stop motion comic, this clip from the opening credits of the Buffy Season 8 Motion Comic gives you an idea of how it works.

You can watch another trailer here. My biggest disappointment in the Buffy animated comic was the voiceover, but with the kind of talent working on Web of Lies, that won’t be an issue.

Espenson, who’s worked with Dushku on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Dollhouse, is co-writing the series with Ryan Scott. We don’t know anything about the story yet, but since Miracle Day has Captain Jack and Gwen investigating why humans stopped dying, a related web story is sure to be intriguing.

Meanwhile, look for Dushku in an upcoming episode of White Collar. (Beware of spoilers at the link!)

What do you think? Do you like the stop motion comic medium? Will you watch Torchwood: Web of Lies?
