Morning Brew – Monday, July 11: A lesbian contestant on “Design Star,” Jessie J kissed her first girl at 17

This just in: Some stereotypes about lesbians are true while some totally aren’t. According to The Daily Mail, some new research shows that most young girls who are “non-gender conforming” (aka tomboys) grow up to be gay. The data was gathered after studying 4000 female twins, and also helped the doctors to establish that being gay is genetic. Um, duh. But obviously this doesn’t apply to everyone. My sister was the tomboy out of the two of us and I’m the lesbian. Although don’t think she hasn’t done a little dabbling herself! That’s right — I’m telling her tale on She won’t mind!

The Sunday Independent has a piece on how LGBT families have to come out of the closet constantly. To which I say, gay people have to come out of the closet constantly in general! Any time I meet someone new and say the words “My wife,” I’m coming out. Or anytime you are saying “I’m going to watch Lost and Delirious tonight after work” to a colleague. Things like that!

Speaking of, a new documentary called Donor Unknown follows JoEllen Marsh, the daughter of lesbian moms who seeks out her sperm donor dad. She says:

My parents always said “you have a donor, not a dad. I was never interested in the father connection. It wasn’t about that for me. But since I was little I always wondered who Donor 150 was. I guess I was in search of my genetic make-up. I wanted to understand myself a little bit more.

Not only did she find her donor — she found 14 siblings, also from his sperm. If he’s not busy, maybe he could donate some more to Kacy and Cori on The Real L Word. He seems like he’s got some real strong sperm!

Tonight begins a new season of Design Star, an interior design competition on HGTV. Among the contestants is Leslie Ezelle, a former Dallas Cowboys cheerleader who is now a 43-year-old mom and breast cancer suvivor. She’s also gay! She tells her hometown paper:

We’re the real-life Modern Family. I’m in a same-sex relationship, and we’re a blended family. My little girl was born in China, and her little boys are quite the handful. So it’s a pretty entertaining household. Plus we have a petting zoo. We’ve got so many living things in this house, it’s crazy. Three dogs, a couple of kitties, turtles, hamsters. I’m doing a major overhaul of this space so we can make room for the growing boys.

Best of luck to Leslie, and her partner at home who has to take care of all those kids and animals.

Jessie J says it was important for her to be upfront about her bisexuality with fans. She tells Glamour magazine:

My mum and dad have known for years and were super cool, my sisters made jokes about it because they were married with kids and I was the rebellious one. I had a girlfriend and tattoos. I was like… hardcore. Because I haven’t tried to hide it, people have gone, “Oh she’s so cool about it, so we’re cool about it.” … How old was I when I had my first girlfriend? Dunno. 17? It wasn’t a girlfriend, more my first girl experience.

It’s true, JJ. We’re totally cool about it.
