Morning Brew – Wednesday, June 15: Melissa Ferrick returns with first new album in five years, Dolly Parton on lesbian rumors

Happy Hump Day!

Did you watch The Voice last night? America chose out singer Beverly McClellan to move to the semi-finals! She looked shocked, and I was really glad I called to vote for her. I’m usually a passive watcher of these kinds of shows, but she definitely rocked it.

The show’s other gay lady with amazing pipes, Vicci Martinez, wowed with “Jolene” last night.

Will she make it through to the semis, too? Have to watch next week to find out. In the meantime, you can still vote for her.

The song Vicci sang was by none other than Ms. Dolly Parton, who loves her LGBT fan base, despite persistent lesbian rumors. She told The Daily Telegraph:

I’ve been married (to Carl Dean) 45 years. People say that because my best friend Judy (Ogle) isn’t married. She says, “I’d rather be called a lesbian than an old maid”. They think nobody could be that good friends for that long, but I assure you, I’m not a lesbian.

It’s basically an Oprah and Gayle situation.

Want to see Kathleen Hanna’s new five-piece version of The Julie Ruin perform? It’s your lucky day!

White Collar could be getting its own musical episode soon, which means Marsha Thomason would have to sing something, obviously. I’d like to see her do something like a Sinead O’Connor “Nothing Compares 2 U,” or maybe a high-energy dance number. If it has to be FBI-themed, I suggest her on-screen girlfriend, Christine, singing “Mrs. Officer” by Lil’ Wayne.

Speaking of White Collar, Diana will be having some fun on next week’s episode. Says the show’s creator, Jeff Eastin, “Diana undercover as an assistant to a journalist from hell. It’s our version of The Devil Wears Prada. [It] gives [Marsha Thomason] a chance to shine a little bit.” Nice!

Want to know how Olivia Munn feels about this Tracy Morgan business? An apology is not enough!

Melissa Ferrick will be releasing her first new studio album in five years. Still Right Here will come out Sept. 15 on MPress Records. Collaborators include Ani Difranco and Kaki King, and she’ll start touring with the record in September.

The Guardian has a piece called “What Straight Men Don’t Understand About Lesbians.” I learned a lot, including that I need to be taking line-dancing lessons buy something called “kagouls.”
