Afternoon Delight: Wedding bells for Joan Armatrading, Sarah Shahi rants on Twitter

Good Afternoon and happy Monday! Just think, only five more days until the weekend!

My favorite news anchor Rachel Maddow did a charming interview with the Guardian, in which she refers to her style as, “definitely not an ‘autocutie'” and encouraged other journalists to come out. In the interview, Maddow emerges from her anchor desk and reveals that she is wearing a worn jacket, a pair of jeans and bulky sneakers. (What’s wrong with that? That’s what I wear to work.) Maddow brags about her wardrobe: “And not just jeans — ugly jeans!”

Most importantly, Maddow also said of being an out journalist, “I’m sure other people in the business have considered reasons why they’re doing what they’re doing, but I do think that if you’re gay you have a responsibility to come out.” Read the entire article (I smiled the entire time I read it) and fall in love with the “first out gay student to get a Rhodes scholarship to Oxford” all over again.

Speaking of the nightly news, EW reports that CBS’ first solo female news anchor (of the three national U.S. broadcast networks), Katie Couric, is expected to sign off this week from her five year stint on the Evening News. CBS has not confirmed Couric’s departure but Couric’s contract does officially end in June. The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal have been speculating that Couric is focusing on developing a daytime talk show that may involve Couric’s former Today Show host Matt Lauer. I really hope she does because I love Couric and Lauer together!

In an interview with The Futon Critic, Nurse Jackie star Peter Facinelli raved about his lesbian moms played by Swoosie Kurtz and Judith Light. I wish they were my lesbian moms. (I wonder Who’s the Boss of that household.)

This Thursday (April 28) Big Gay Sketch Show star Kate McKinnon is performing her newest show, Kate McKinnon on Ice: A One-Woman Sketchtacular! The show is at 6:30 PM at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater in New York City. Tickets are only $5 and it’s well worth it to watch McKinnon’s freak flag fly!

Congratulations to British singer-songwriter Joan Armatrading, who is getting married to longtime partner Maggie Butler (Butler designed the artwork for Armatrading’s 1979 live album Steppin’ Out) in a civil partnership. The private ceremony will take place on May 2 in Shetland, UK.

Armatrading, who is a pioneering female solo rock artist, has released 20 albums during her 40-year career, been nominated for three Grammy Awards and most recently performed alongside Cyndi Lauper on her True Colors tour. I wish Armatrading and Butler a very happy and long life together. (Thanks for the tip, Suzanne!)

Sarah Shahi played the sexy and badass DJ Carmen on The L Word (I still can’t believe Shane f–ked that relationship up. I mean Sarah Shahi was going to marry you, you fool!) and in real life Shahi seems to be a badass as well. Shahi had an unpleasant run in with hotel heiress Paris Hilton last week and she took her frustration to Twitter. Here’s the entire rant:

OK ladies, listen up! If you are ever lucky enough to see Sarah Shahi, make sure you follow the speed limit and keep both hands on the wheel. She takes driving very seriously.

On Thursday, April 28, Lady Gaga will be making an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show to perform her new single, “Judas.” According to Gaga’s label, Interscope Records, the “Judas” music video will be premiering next week during American Idol. (I’ve personally hit my Gaga overload. Aren’t there any other bisexual artists out there that are transported via embryos?)

If you enjoy Betty White as much as I do (wait, did that sound dirty?) check out White’s blooper reel from her TV Land series Hot in Cleveland.

The legendary Kate Bush released a sneak peek of her new music video for her song “Deeper Understanding.” I think the clip is a warning society about online overload. When’s the last time you went outside and sat in the sun?

Bush has been hinting that she will go on tour in the near future. Bush’s last tour was in 1979. (That was the year I was born!) She recently told Mojo, “I’d like to think I’ll do some shows before I get too ancient – turn up with my Zimmer frame. I don’t give up hope I’ll do some live work but I don’t quite know how it would fit with my life. Let’s just see, shall we?” What a tease!

If you like Glee and Barbie dolls, well, then you’re most likely a 12-year-old girl or just young at heart. Even plastic dolls can’t help but join the Gleek bandwagon.

This week spend your late nights with some of the hottest women in Hollywood. Tonight Christina Aguilera sits down with Jay Leno and Wanda Sykes stops by the Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson (it’s a rerun). Tomorrow Kristin Chenoweth and Jillian Michaels will both appear on the Tonight Show. (Chenoweth will also be on The Ellen DeGeneres Show tomorrow afternoon.)

If you’re not a TV person and you prefer to play on your computer, log on to Twitter and chat it up with Loving Annabelle director Katherine Brooks via @thekatbrooks at 8 PM CST tonight. Brooks is preparing to shoot her documentary Face 2 Face, in which she will travel the United States and meet up with 50 random Facebook friends. Check out the film’s trailer and pick Brooks’ brain about her Facebook friend selections.

Out frontwoman Abisha Uhl and her band Sick of Sarah are currently touring the UK. Tomorrow they will be performing at 7 PM at Bodega (23 Pelham Street Nottingham, United Kingdom) and check out their entire tour schedule.

Lesbian/Bi Photo of the Day:

Nancylee Myatt and Paige Bernhardt (the producers of Cowgirl Up and the forces behind the push for a South of Nowhere movie) are letting their hare down. Get it? “Hare” because they have bunny ears? Actually, the bunny ears are everyday accessories for these two. This is not a special Easter costume.
