New Music Tuesday: 4-19-2011

Happy Tuesday everybody! It is windy and cold and disgusting outside today here in Chicago. I’m hoping the rest of you are having better weather in your cities so that I can live vicariously through you! We’ve got some great music coming out today so at least there’s a rainbow at the end of the storm.

Today’s top spot goes to Chicago native, gal pal and overall awesome person, Daphne Willis. Her debut album was filled with sunshine and fierce positivity and this follow-up is more of a coming-of-age story filled with highs and lows. Her folk-pop vibe hasn’t changed but the sound has matured and brought with it some really great songs.

Merrill Garbus sure is cooky and I absolutely love her. She’s like a hippie from another planet and that planet is called Funky. This is some of the most ear-friendly and fun-time inducing experimental music I’ve ever heard in my life. In some fantastic news, it’s going to be a tUnE-yArDs two-fer for the month of April since Merrill did the production of one of my favorite albums of the year: Thao & Mirah which comes out next week.

The vocalist/keyboardist from Decoder Ring has released a followup to her 2009 self-titled debut and it’s filled with sugary pop music sure to bring out any dimples your cheeks may be hiding.

I actually just featured this band on my list of Women to Listen to two weeks ago! This album is packed with layer upon layer of stylized instrumentals bringing forth elements of jazz, psychedelia, surf punk and far eastern influences.

I can’t lie: Kimberly Caldwell was always who I considered the hottest American Idol contestant (with Kelly Clarkson coming in second). It’s been seven years since she graced the stage in front of America and the judges but she’s delivered a strong debut album! It’s packed with throaty pop in the same vein as Pink and even a little bit of Ms. Clarkson.

The debut album from this brother/sister duo is a fantastic nod to a classic rock past. Fans of Fleetwood Mac should definitely check them out. I’m talking power guitars, power piano and power vocals.

Honorable Mentions: The Watson Twins have put out an awesome EP of cover songs including jams from The Black Keys, PJ Harvey and Bill Withers. Also new: Cam’ron & Vado, DJ Quik, Steve Miller Band, Gorillaz, The Head and the Heart and I’m From Barcelona.

That’s all for this Tuesday’s new music. Now go share it with someone you love.
