Morning Brew – Monday, April 11: Shay Mitchell, Melissa Etheridge, Amber Heard and more at GLAAD Awards

Good morning!

The GLAAD Media Awards went down in Los Angeles last night and I’m here to share the highlights with you — aka photos of the women who who part of the event.

Obviously Troian Bellisario is homophobic and that’s why she didn’t attend with her Pretty Little Liars co-stars. (Just kidding.)

For the complete list of winners, visit GLAAD’s site.

A Jeff Buckley biopic is in the works, which means that someone has to play his bisexual girlfriend, Joan Wasser (aka Joan as Police Woman). Any suggestions?

Is Jane Lynch bringing Glee down? TVSquad.com has Sue Sylvester on the top of their list of characters who are hindering their series’ true potential. I disagree with most of their picks, but Sue is the one I am shocked by. I wonder how many of you would switch out Sue and put Artie in her place..

It appears that the next episode of Showtime’s The Borgias will have a brief lesbian kiss.

Is anyone watching the period drama? I wonder if this peck will be a fleeting friendly moment or the women involved will actually have some kind of undercover romance. From what I can tell, they’re both involved with powerful men, so their chances of having a full-fledged lesbian relationship in 15th Century Italy.

Meryl Streep isn’t looking like herself on the cover of Vassar’s alumni magazine, but that’s the point. She’s dressed as the university’s founder Matthew Vassar from a portrait of him from 1861. Convincing, eh?

Speaking of higher education, are all-women’s colleges still necessary? That’s what Huffington Post college blogger Tom Matlack ponders in a recent post, though it is hard to ignore he’s a dude. He writes:

Beyond serving a destination for horny young men, the colleges always gave me the creeps, perhaps because I was explicitly excluded from the community or because of some juvenile fantasy that the schools harbored a lesbian cult.

If this doesn’t already give you a good idea, read the rest and then you will probably think the same thing I do: This guy just doesn’t get it — we are excluding him from our lesbian cults!

Nigerian actress Georginia Ibe told The Sun News that she one turned down a gay role early in her career. She explains why:

There was an audition where I was asked to play the role of a lesbian but I rejected it. They were disappointed. Even when they persuaded me, I told them my decision was personal. So, they asked me to wait for the second audition since I rejected the role. It was quite embarrassing. I don’t think acting as a profession is all about exposing your body which is supposed to be your pride as a woman. What would I gain selling my secret beauty to the public because of acting? When I came into the industry, my goal was to impart knowledge to my viewers. I don’t accept every role because I want to get to stardom. I’m an upcoming actress with a style, so I’m quite selective of the role I play.

Does being a lesbian mean exposing your body, or was that just another part of the role? Is “secret beauty” a lesbian term I am not aware of yet? What does it all mean!?! At any rate, a lot of straight actresses play gay and win awards and accolades and stuff, so it might have actually turned out OK for you, Georgina.

Coming April 13, Oprah will host a gaggle of women rock stars on her show, including Joan Jett, Stevie Nicks, Pat Benetar and Salt N Peppa. It’s a tiny photo, but you can see some of today’s younger musicians in the mix, too.

You probably won’t learn anything new from this MSN Wonderwall list of stars who have “experimented with their sexuality,” but maybe you want a reminder of the time Lily Allen told a gay magazine she hooked up with twins.

India is going to see a lesbian play soon, called Yahin Kahin Bahut Dur. The show’s producer Mohammad Ali Baig tells The Times of India of its premise:

The play does not sympathize nor does it stand in judgment of lesbianism. In this unique love triangle I play a sensitive, widely read and well-informed young man who finds that the budding writer whom he fancies is in love with an older businesswoman.

So you’re saying lesbianism just exists? Well how about that!

A National Organization for Marriage strategist named Louis Marinelli has come out in support of marriage equality. He told the gay blog Good As You:

The lesbian and gay people whom I made a profession out of opposing became real people (on the summer bus tour) for me almost instantly. For the first time I had empathy for them and remember asking myself what I was doing. As a supporter of civil marriage equality, any statements I’ve made in the past about not recognizing homosexual relationships for one reason or another, of course it goes without saying that I no longer stand by these comments and I apologize for the insensitivity. Same-sex couples, whether they are married, in civil unions or domestic partnerships, ought to be recognized for what they are.

So the bus tour he went on, in attempt to promote the idea that only one kind of marriage exists (“between a man and a woman”) actually helped him meet gay people, who he then saw were real people who should be able to get married. I hope this happens for everyone on that bus tour/who works for NOM. See gays? Just be out you can show people what love is all about.

Alas, we still have many opinions on why we’re “not by God’s design,” as someone says this animated short lenses from out filmmaker Becca Hyman.
