There are certain elements that society feels belong to one gender. A mustache is one of them. Women who rock some upper-lip hair aren’t celebrated like Burt Reynolds or Tom Selleck, but the addition of even a fake stache can add some edge or playfulness on women. And if you’re Frida Kahlo, it becomes part of your image.
This week, The Daily Beast created a photo gallery of Famous Ladies Wearing Mustaches, which I thought would make a great Huddle topic for our bloggers. Unfortunately, it seems that not all of us are into a woman with some hair there, even if it’s faux.
Here’s who played along when I asked: “Do you have a favorite photo or female character that someone has once posed in/with a mustache?”
Courtney Gillette: It’s no secret that I love rock camp for girls, and it’s also no secret that at Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls in Brooklyn, NY, it’s become tradition for the campers to sport fake mustaches of all variety at some point while they’re rocking out. So my favorite photo of girls with mustaches is of rock-camp-born teenage girl band, Deux Chattes.
If you haven’t yet heard of these awesome gals, stick around. And when their awesome jams meet ultimate fame, hopefully they’ll have their clever mustache fingers at the ready. Bonus: another rock camp teen was inspired to document her outings as a fake mustachioed gal on her blog, Who’s That Girl Wearing A Mustache? Check it.
Drummerdeeds: No fake ‘stache could ever beat or look better than Sarah Silverman‘s upper-lip accessory at the 2009 Emmys, when she was nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series. The deadpan delivery, the mismatched hair color — she looked damn good.
Heather Hogan: I know everyone is shocked, but I think I’m going to change it up and choose a favorite I don’t usually choose — Naomi and Emily! Hmm, what’s that? I always choose Naomi and Emily? Yeah, that’s ’cause they’re the best. Emily, look out! Your poncho is on fire! There’s a dead girl in jean shorts rummaging through your rubbish bin!
Trish Bendix: I have always been a big fan of CocoRosie’s gender-bending, which has a lot to do with Bianca Casady’s stache. She darkens it with eye pencil and even gives it some character with all kinds of styles. Bianca has commitment to the look!
Readers, don’t you love some stache play?
