New Music Tuesday: 1-25-2011

Happy Tuesday indeed everybody! I’m a bit overwhelmed by the incredible new releases coming out today. Seriously, I’m going to need to get in touch with all of these labels to try to work some magic and have them send some promo stuff my way, otherwise I won’t have lunch money for the next two weeks.

The Queen of Rockabilly proves she is still alive, kicking and here to tear s–t up on this Jack White produced tour de force. Like, seriously, I want to hang out with Ms. Jackson, play some shuffleboard and sip on some whiskey. Something tells me she’d be able to keep up with me. For an added treat, check out her video for “Thunder On The Mountain.”

Dark and ominous tones begin and end this fantastic mixture of southern rock balladry and soul. Gorgeous, sweeping vocals drive this album that is packed with emotion. In a way, she actually reminds me a bit of Girl In A Coma, which is a huge plus in my book. For the price of an email address, you can grab her first single, “Vultures” over at her MySpace page.

It’s so weird, for some reason I always end up forgetting about Deerhoof, but then when I hear them I’m like, “This is fantastic stuff! What’s my problem? Get your head in the game, Mia!” It’s part indie-punk, part rock, part whimsical experimental and all badass. Definitely give it a shot.

Oh man, I am so pumped about this release. Not only is Joan Wasser bisexual, but she’s a fellow Boston University graduate and she studied one of my very favorite instruments there: the violin. The Deep Field is a departure from the Joan I know on To Survive, where her 2008 release was slow, dreamy and thick as molasses, her latest album is packed with rock power and showcases her ability to be multi-dimensional. If you’re a fan of Portishead and don’t know about Joan, check this out.

As the name suggests, this is indie rock that plays as though it were born on a commune in the woods after a ritualistic sacrifice (don’t worry, no animals were harmed in the making of this album). Rain Phoenix’s voice is soft yet raw and the album is packed with poetic minimalism.

Mezzo-soprano DiDonato has taken on a huge challenge — singing both the male and female characters in this collection of arias. I’m no opera aficionado so I cant speak to how this is different from or similar to much of what is out there. What I can say though, is that this is beautiful and makes me feel smarter just by having it in my iTunes library.

Honorable Mentions: Iron & Wine (fantastic), Amos Lee, Cold War Kids, Destroyer, Gang of Four, Wisin y Yandel, Talib Kweli, Blaqstarr, Pendulum, KT Tunstall (live), The Radio Dept., The Veils, Say Hi, Fujiya & Miyagi, Casey Spooner, Carrie Elkina and Corrine Bailey Rae.

Until next week, enjoy the fantastic tunes you see here — many of them can be streamed in their entirety over at Spinner.com.
