Your Weekly Women to Listen To: Girls Dead Monster, Sonique, Jessie J, and more

I’m sick today and I’m really not happy about it. Tea, Dayquil, soup — nothing is helping. By the time you read this I’m hoping to be on the couch with French bulldogs resting next to me and bad television on in the background while the germs take their party elsewhere. While I tend to this cold, here are 10 more ladies for you to check out.

File Under: Pop-Hop grime, R&B soul, fearless ferocity

From: The UK

For Fans of: Lily Allen, Alicia Keys, Leona Lewis, Duffy, bubble baths, Fergie, latex, kickboxing.

Bonus: I had seen Jessie’s video for “Do It Like A Dude” and even though the video was hot and includes some studs and ladies kissing, I felt like it was gimmicky. Thanks to twitter user @JenniferPinch, I gave Jessie J another chance and was blown away by her youtube channel. Her songs are fresh and her voice is just insanely good.

File Under: Surf punk, hot ladies with tattoos

From: L.A.

For Fans of: Rancid, Motley Crue, Suicide Girls, Inked magazine, L7, breaking glass while looking fashionable.

Bonus: They’re giving out two free downloads at their label’s website.

File Under: Pop R&B, Soul, a real American idol

From: Chicago in the house

For Fans of: Whitney Houston (pre-crack), Mary J. Blige, Chrisette Michelle, Aretha Franklin, red velvet cupcakes, elegance.

Bonus: She and fellow Chicagoans, Common and Lupe Fiasco, have put out a free download of their song, “We Can Do It Now.” Also, she is looking FIERCE with her newly slimmed down Weight Watchers body.

File Under: Sultry pop, sometimes electro-pop.

From: Paris

For Fans of: An updated version of Bonnie Tyler, an after-sex cigarette, Paolo Nutini (they recorded a song together, “Duo”), Goldfrapp.

Bonus: Zazie was born to entertain. She wrote her first song at the age of four and her first play at the age of eight. I was just playing Thundercats and reading “Archie” comic books.

File Under: Accomplished cellist who brings her music to life with the passion in her hands.

From: Rochester, New York

For Fans of: Letting music take over your emotions, Tori Amos (in that she plays her cello the way Tori plays her piano), eggplant as a color — and I guess as a vegetable too, German expressionist films.

Bonus: She recently did a tiny desk concert at NPR and it is available for streaming.

File Under: Electro pop, dance, gay club music

From: London

For Fans of: Rozalla, Amber, disco, dancing on boxes, strobe lights, RuPaul’s Drag Race, Cascada.

Bonus: I heard one of her songs at the gym yesterday and it was a blast from my past. I couldn’t listen to her for a while in college after my girlfriend and I broke up and she reminded me of her — but, 10 years later, we’re back together and Sonique can be played at high volume.

File Under: Alternative Rock with a sprinkle of pop, bands made for television purposes

From: Japan

For Fans of: Japanimation, Angel Beats! television show, Miley Cyrus, Selena Gomez.

File Under: 90s girl bands, angst-rock

From: Formed in NYC

For Fans of: Kinnie Star, Tegan and Sara, Liz Phair, pixie haircuts, Trader Joes, t-shirts with knit sweaters over, The L Word.

Bonus: Before there was Uh Huh Her, The L Word and yogurt commercials, Leisha Haley was a Murmur. She and co-founder Heather Grody formed the band in 1991 and kept it going until renaming the band, Gush in 2001.

File Under: Light-hearted pop Americana, acoustic folk, singer-songwriter

From: Chicago

For Fans of: Catie Curtis, Meg Hutchinson, Shawn Colvin, sun showers, quinoa, Colbie Caillat.

And there you have it everybody. I’m going to go rest and I’ll be back with more tunes next week.
