Morning Brew – Friday, January 7: Drew Barrymore has a crush on Rachel Maddow, The Sounds ready new album for March

HI all! It’s Friday. Yay!

Lesbian director Jennie Livingston (famous for her film Paris is Burning) told IndieWire about her new documentary, Earth Camp One. The film is very personal, as it “explores her relationship with her family after four close family members died within five years.”

LIvingston said

I think sometimes you can approach social issues better by not naming them directly (as I did with Paris is Burning) than by saying: “I have this issue, and I’m making this film about it. It’s not the fashion now, but I see nonfiction filmmaking eventually becoming a bit more like creative nonfiction, in the literary sphere. Whether you’re right-wing Christian, or Jewish Buddhist hippie left wing faggy New Yorker, it seems to me that the facts of embracing what it is to be alive are very complicated and challenging!

Earth Camp One is almost complete, and Livingston is going to Sundance this year to seek some additional investors.

In other amazing lesbian-related film news, out filmmaker Nancy D. Kates has received a $35,000 grant from The Foundation for Jewish Culture to help finish her documentary Regarding Susan Sontag. Although Sontag wasn’t a practicing Jew, and pretty much disregarded her being Jewish altogether, Kates told Forward.com how she was able to get the grant.

We made the case for why this is a Jewish film. While Sontag was certainly not religiously Jewish, she was driven by moral questions that came from Jewish values.

Newlywed Amanda Palmer’s new solo album, Amanda Palmer Goes Down Under, is all about Australia and New Zealand. She’ll be touring both countries this month, too!

Comic artist Greg Williams creates comics out of people’s Tweets. This week, he took on Jill Sobule. This was a picture of an old guy stopping Jill on the street to ask if she was a hippie.

Pretty good, no?

E! Online asked Drew Barrymore who her “celebrity crush” was and she said Rachel Maddow. A girl after our own heart! That’s a nicer way of saying “Back off, sister.”

Out singer Katie Stelmanis fronts the band Austra, which you will surely be hearing about soon, if you haven’t already. The band has just signed with Domino Records, which is home to acts like Franz Ferdinand, Artic Monkeys and The Kills. You need to hear their song “Young & Gay.”

In other music news, The Sounds will be releasing their new album, Something to Die For, on March 29. And since Maja Ivarsson (their bisexual frontwoman) is even better in person, I’m psyched that they’ll be touring the U.S. this spring.

This year’s Kelly McGillis Classic Flag Football Tournament will be held Feb. 6-14 in Key West. Now that she’s out, it has to be even more gay than usual, right?

Nerve.com has a first-person account this week titled, “True Stories: The End of an Era — The hookup that taught me I was a lesbian.” The gist:

I felt a desire to be inside of Ken and kept reaching up for t–s that weren’t there. I was annoyed with how easy it was to get him off and kept thinking how much more fun I could be having if he was a girl.

And that’s how you know you’re a lesbian.Am I right?

AfterEllen reader Feli delivered some bad news yesterday. Apparently Miriam and Rebecca on Verbotene Liebe decided they should just be friends and ended their relationship. The worst part? It seems they also decided they just wanted companionship, and were lonely because they couldn’t find the right guys. You get an F, Verbotene Liebe.

Today on Lesbian TV: The Ellen DeGeneres Show (check local listings), Bringing Home Baby (Fit TV 11 a.m.), The Talk (CBS 2 p.m.), Whose Wedding Is It Anyway? (Style 3 p.m.), Say Yes to the Dress (TLC 4:30 p.m, 6:30 p.m.), The Rachel Maddow Show (MSNBC 9 p.m.) and Out of Practice (Universal HD 10 p.m.) (Thanks Roni!)

I’m going to be at TCA all next week, so someone else will be Brewin’. But I’ll try to get as much lesbian scoop as possible from the shows/stars that will be in attendance, and update you daily. Duh!

Have a fab weekend.
