Styled Out: Starting with skin

It seems that conversations about skin care are usually limited to the article or 10 that you’d read in magazines like Glamour or Self, which are fine and dandy publications but not ones, I’m guessing, a lot of my readers pick up on the regular. I never used to be someone with a set regimen (tsk tsk), but over the past year, I’ve had some issues and have taken one up in an attempt to rebalance my poor face. I never thought I would say this, but having a regimen actually does make a difference. Let’s have a heart-to-heart about it.

Skin care products are often like hair care products: sometimes you have to pay a little bit more to get a bit better quality and the best results. In the expensive bracket, I favor Dr. Hauschka. It’s free of parabens and other undesirable additives that generally do more harm for your skin than good, and every product I’ve ever used has been awesome. Since the line is on the higher end, you can definitely get the best diagnosis from their counter, but if you’d rather deal with the interweb, they have a tool on their site to figure out what’s best for your face.

My new favorite line was born not too long ago by folks who left the afore-mentioned Dr. Hauschka to start Evan Healy. There aren’t words in the English language to express how much I love them. Their tag line pretty much says it all: The Skin Breathes. Since living in Seattle, I found out that my dry skin can go to new levels. I was getting Eczema on my face which you know, I didn’t really care for, so I gave their Lavender Facial Tonic Hydrosol a whirl and it’s taken me from scaly in patches on my cheeks and forehead (ew) to clear and smooth skin. I also use their Rose Cleansing Milk and Pomegranate Repair Serum. Honestly, for the price, this line is by far my favorite and I have seriously seen results since I’ve started using it.

Can’t totally spend all of your money on your skin? I respect that. If you’re shopping the traditional drugstore route, I think you’ll be super happy with Burt’s Bees. This particular brand has grown in popularity over the past few years and you can find it almost anywhere these days. Compared to the other less expensive options, this one is by far the most awesome. I’m a big fan of their Herbal Blemish Stick. it lasts forever and kills those zits in, like, two days flat. I have a good friend who swears by their Marshmallow Vanishing Crème. Basically, it has the potential to be magical if you get the right combination down.

Great style starts with confidence and your face is the most noticeable thing on you — put your best mug forward.
