Morning Brew – Tuesday, October 26: More lesbians coming to “Corrie,” Noomi Rapace & Annette Bening win awards for playing gay

Morning!

Good news Corrie fans! Sacha Parkinson has signed a new contract with the show to stay on through 2011. According to the Daily Star, a source on the show says:

She’s storylined well into next year and is one of the soap’s most popular young actresses. There will be lots of twists and turns over the next few months as their relationship continues and life throws a number of things at both of them. By bringing in a few more lesbians it’s only going to further spice things up. Everyone is very excited about it all.

A few more lesbians? Magic words!

No Ordinary Family has been picked up for a full season, which is great for lesbian scribe Ali Adler and anyone who watches the show for Julie Benz.

Out DJ Kim Ann Foxman has a new project with her Hercules & Love Affair partner-in-crime Andy Butler. It’s called MR. INTL and they’ve released a preview of some of their new tracks on XLR8R. I am loving “Creature,” which has Kim singing vocals.

Salon.com has a piece called “The irony of my feminist photo shoot.” Tracy Clark-Flory writes about an experience she had posing for a More magazine spread on feminists. An excerpt:

The headline accompanying the shot: “This is what the new feminists look like.” I showed it to my roommate, a lesbian and reproductive rights activist, and her first response was: “Where are the butch girls?” Indeed, it’s a safe, commercialized vision of young feminism.

It’s just what we do; NEEDS MORE BUTCH.

k.d. lang is going to sing on the Glee Christmas album coming out Nov. 16. She’ll be duetting on “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch” with Matt Morrison. So this year you have k.d. and Indigo Girls singing holiday tunes — what more do you need?

The Financial Times says Annie Leibovitz is having financial troubles because her photographs aren’t worth buying and she doesn’t know how to sell them. Yikes.

Our resident Friday Night Lights superfan Lesley Goldberg let me know that lesbian Devin will appear on tomorrow’s Season 5 series premiere on DirecTV. She also probably said something about full eyes and clear hearts or something, but I didn’t really get it.

TV writer Jill Soloway (United States of Tara, Six Feet Under) and her lesbian sis Faith Soloway are part of a new book on sibling relationships called Freud’s Blind Spot. The Rumups ran an excerpt of them interviewing each other, and it’s a great read. Here’s part of the piece.

Jill: At what age did you know you were gay? We all had crushes on our girlfriends. How did you know you were different?

Faith: I think I wanted to be a boy. I rode around topless on my bike knowing that people might think I was a boy. I was always the dad when we played house. And I made out with my girlfriends in these games and couldn’t wait to. I think I knew I was gay really young. Like, ten. But then I did move through really falling for boys. I really liked my seventh grade boyfriend Jacques Sandburg. I remember loving him. I did connect to a lot of boys and loved them. Loved their souls. In high school I loved Robin Brown and Chris Clemente. But in high school I also had the kind of secret pining for other girls. Never my friends, always on-sideline girls; friends of my friends. And when I was younger through high school, huge crushes on my female teachers and camp counselors. I remember a certain camp counselor at the Hyde Park JCC who actually made me feel weak.

Freud’s Blind Spot will be available Nov. 16.

At last night’s 14th Annual Hollywood Awards Gala, there were several women who have played gay/will play gay in upcoming films in attendance.

In fact, Annette won the Actress Award, Noomi won the Hollywood Spotlight Award. That’s two wins for queer characters!

Today on TV: The Ellen DeGeneres Show (check local listings), The Talk (CBS 2p.m.), Glee (Fox 8 p.m.), The Rachel Maddow Show (MSNBC 9 p.m. and midnight), Stargate: Universe (Syfy 9 p.m.) and The Good Wife (CBS 10 p.m.). (Thanks Roni!)

Have a terrific Tuesday!
