THIS JUST IN: MISS NEW YORK IS THE FIRST MISS AMERICA CONTESTANT TO CHAMPION GAY RIGHTS

Now, I don’t know how you feel about beauty queens. After the likes of opposite marriage, anti-gay cheerleader Carrie Prejean, probably not that hot. But get ready to say hello to your new favorite person to wear a sash and a crown, possibly ever. She is Miss New York Claire Buffie and she is pretty damn awesome.

Who now, what now, you ask? Well Claire is the newly Crowned Miss New York and she will be the first Miss America contestant to compete with a platform of gay rights. The 24-year-old Indianapolis native is a professional photographer, trained dancer and an Apple employee. Man, someone hit the overachiever button extra hard. She also happens to have a lesbian sister, who she said inspired her to take up the GLBT rights platform.

Intelligent and compassionate, indeed. She is on the executive board of PFLAG New York City and has appeared at Empire Pride events as well as talked at schools. Her Miss America platform is titled “Straight for Equality: Let’s Talk.” When the Miss America pageant airs Jan. 15 on ABC, she will be the first contestant in its 90-year history to champion gay right. Here she is with her family after winning the crown. I bet you can’t guess which one is her gay sister, Sarah.

Claire gave an interview to The Advocate last month. When asked if she thought the Miss America organization was ready for her platform she said:

Well, I think it should be. Look around. This is a nonprofit organization run completely by volunteers. The people involved in sustaining this program, so many of them are LGBT when you think about it, our fan base. The gay community has stood behind us. When I walk into an event with a crown on, I’m supported. I think they are ready. I think I am prepared to present it to Miss America in a way that they won’t be able to say no. I acknowledge that there’s a risk involved, because at the end of the day the one person standing is going to represent the entire organization, but at the end of the day, she also represents the entire nation. Ultimately, I have a platform about respect and equality for all.

Anyone else humming “There she is, Miss America…” in their heads right about now? I’m a California gal, but suddenly I love New York. Good luck, Claire.

WORKING THE POLL: REAL LIVE GIRLS

On the most recent episode of The Real L Word, cameras followed Whitney and one of her many girlfriends into the bedroom where a real sex scene was filmed.

Was it exploitation? Was it OK because, as Whitney says, it was between “two consenting adults”? Did you miss it because you stopped watching the show when Whitney claimed to have the “power of the clam”?

In our last poll, we asked you if a new coming out reality show will be good for visibility. Your response was a definite maybe.

This was a pretty gay week in the new music department.

The Independent‘s Pink List of 2010 was released this week and includes Phyllida Lloyd, Fiona Shaw and Goldfrapp. Unfortunately, there are only 30 women on the list of the 101 “most influential gay and lesbian people in Britain today.”
