THIS JUST IN: SWEDISH PAPERS WILL NOT RUN A “CLICHÉ” LESBIAN ADVERTISEMENT

Two newspapers in southern Sweden are refusing to run an ad from a local sexual health organization that features three scantily clad lesbians. The ad, which is part of a campaign called “Kärleken har många ansikten” (Love has many faces), is meant to improve LGBT visibility in the region.

And while most people wouldn’t find three women showing a little bit of skin while they embrace offensive, one editor seems to think it’s “cliché,” according to Sweden’s The Local.

Daniel Sandström, editor-in-chief of the paper Sydsvenskan, said:

I have no problem with printing provocative images; we had pictures from, among others, artist Andres Serrano … But the picture in question simply didn’t meet standards of acceptability. I think rather that it reproduces a cliché-filled image of lesbian love.

Here it is:

I’m sure he wouldn’t find it “cliché-filled” if the ad featured two women with a man – which is about as cliché as you can get in terms of lesbians in advertisements. If he was legitimately offended by lesbians, that’s one thing, but to not run the ad because he deems it “cliché” is completely bogus.

Mikael Andersson of the Skåne-based affiliate of the Swedish Federation for Lesbian,Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Rights, seems to agree. He explained to Resume magazine:

They aren’t thought of as stereotypical images meant to tempt the viewer, rather it’s the models who are doing something between themselves.

I guess that’s what some men have a problem with. The ad wasn’t trying to appeal to them, but rather strengthen visibility. Men don’t find that nearly as sexy as their “cliché-filled” threesome fantasies.

The campaign, which also includes television ads, is pretty tame, if you ask me. I mean, aren’t Swedes familiar with The L Word, Lady Gaga, or even Grey’s Anatomy? (Last week’s shower scene, though brief, was way more risque than this harmless ad).

Is this the best image that could be used to promote lesbian visibility? Definitely not. Is it cliché? Perhaps. Have we seen worse? Of course. Were the publishers right to not run the ad? What about the good intentions behind it?

WORKING THE POLL: LESBIAN NECKING ON NETWORK TV

Did you happen to catch Callie and Arizona’s brief shower scene on last week’s episode of Grey’s Anatomy? It’s not too shocking that it was super short — network TV is such a tease — but how does it match up with some other Sapphic scenes on the boob tube?

The first ever lesbian sex scene on network TV was from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, between Willow and Kennedy. Then in 2006, Tiffani Thiessen and Jaime Pressley hooked up in a hot tub and on the dance floor in the short-lived Fox series Fastlane.

In 2009, Anna Torv kissed a stripper in Fringe and Olivia Wilde, who we just can’t get away from, explored her bisexuality with a woman who would eventually become her patient in the opening scene of an episode of House.

Were any of these sexier than Callie and Arizona sharing a shower? Let us know which lesbian kissing scene on free TV you found to be the hottest.

The hottest lesbian love scene on network TV(opinion)

Last week, we asked you who you’d like to see lock lips with Megan Fox on-screen (or, you know, off.) The winner was Olivia Wilde, who Megan would obviously not refuse. Clearly, though, Betty White needs to step up her game.
