Best. Lesbian. Week. Ever. (March 9, 2007)

MAEVE QUINLAN TALKS TRASH

Angela Robinson’s upcoming web series Girltrash, about five ass-kicking girls in L.A. in the middle of a gang war “getting by any way they can, even if it means double crossing your best friend or former lover,” already has a dream cast that includes Rose Rollins (The L Word‘s Tasha), Jordana Brewster (D.E.B.S.‘ Lucy Diamond), Mandy Musgrave and Gabrielle Christian (South of Nowhere‘s Spencer and Ashley), and Margaret Cho.

Now you can add South of Nowhere‘s Maeve Quinlan (aka SON’s homophobic mom Paula) to the list.

Maeve plays a closeted lesbian judge who … well, I’ll just let her explain it. Here’s what Maeve told me about her Girltrash role:

I play a very successful married (to a man) lesbian judge. I’m a sugar mama and I’ve got a hottie 21-year-old girlfriend – named Louann – on the side. My character is Melinda Cragen, better known as Judge Cragen. She’s very jealous if anyone checks out her girlfriend – don’t mess with Judge Cragen. I’ve been dying, dying, dying to be directed by Angela Robinson. And it was everything I thought it would be. She’s so cool and incredibly talented. Every time I saw her I would accost her and say, ‘Can I PLEASE be directed by you?’ So she called me up and asked if I wanted to do it.

I was really hoping that I would get to play a lesbian. And I did. And not just any lesbian – a married lesbian judge sugar mama! I had such a good time. In one scene, we’re in a bar and we’re kissing. It’s a territorial kiss – I’m making sure that everyone in that bar knows she’s mine. But I’m a married judge in the town, so I try to keep it on the down low as well. It was my first screen kiss with a woman. Mandy [Musgrave] came to the set to watch, and we were cracking up. It was funny for her to see me as Judge Cragen after seeing me as Paula Carlin. So it was my best lesbian week ever!

Have I mentioned how much I like Maeve? Yeah, she’s one cool chick, and one of the nicest people I’ve met in L.A. And as far as her similarity to her SON character goes, if Paula Carlin is Samantha on Bewitched, Maeve is Serena (you know, the fun, sexy one).

Check out these exclusive production stills Angela sent of Maeve’s scenes in Girltrash:

Between her role as a porn star on Dirt and this on Girltrash, Maeve hopes people will “finally see that I’m an ACTRESS and that Paula is just a character.” Look for more about Girltrash in the next edition of Angela’s AfterEllen.com column, Fringe Theory, in a few weeks. And before you ask, no, I don’t know when the first episode of Girltrash will be posted, or any other details. I’ll let you know when I do!

Speaking of South of Nowhere, if you need a Spashley fix to get you through until next fall, tickets just went on sale for the first ever South of Nowhere appreciation conference, to be held in L.A. this June 9th and 10th. So far, confirmed guests include Mandy Musgrave, Gabrielle Christian and Maeve Quinlan. Events will include panels, autograph signings and a Danso Gordon dunking booth.

SEE JAYNE ROCK

A reader alerted me to Jayne Doe (that’s “Jayne” with a “y”), an up-and-coming rock band out of Oklahoma featuring two lesbians (and a guy). Here’s a photo of the trio (that’s Kendra on the left, Kelli on the right):

What’s better than cute lesbian rock stars? Cute lesbian rock stars who are dating each other! That’s right: Kendra and Kelli have been dating for two years, and (naturally, because they’re lesbians) they live together. Check out their music at MySpace.com/JayneDoeRock.

AND NO ONE JUMPS OFF A ROOF WITH A FALCON. PROBABLY.

Famous Hong Kong directors Wong Kar-Wai and Stanley Kwan have teamed up to make a new lesbian movie with a stunning new plot: Two high school girls develop a mutual attraction to one another while, at the same time, one of them is falling for a guy.

What a fantastic idea! What a bold choice! It’s great to see such new territory explored on film. I mean, some people might say it sounds exactly like Lost and Delirious. And pretty similar to Higher Learning. And Personal Best, Prey for Rock & Roll and Head in the Clouds. Kissing Jessica Stein, even. But really, it’s completely different. I mean, for one thing, it stars Ke Jiayan, who was not in any of the other movies. For another, I bet it doesn’t involve a lengthy discussion of the word “marinate.” See how different it is?

In more groundbreaking movie plot news, the upcoming big-screen comedy Sunshine Cleaning about two sisters who run a crime scene cleanup outfit co-stars Emily Blunt (The Devil Wears Prada) as one of the sisters who becomes sexually obsessed with and stalks 24‘s Mary Lynn Rajskub, who plays a blood bank technician.

This isn’t Blunt’s first experience with the love that dare not speak its name: She played Nathalie Press’ girlfriend in My Summer of Love, and photographers recently captured her trying to hold Prada co-star Anne Hathaway’s hand at the Oscars:

SHE SAID WHAT?

Former Top Model contestant Kim Stolz guests on this week’s episode, talking about politics, music and her worst date ever (hint: it involves kitty litter).

BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE!

As I told you in my column back in January, Showtime has renewed The L Word for a fifth season–but now it’s official. Interesting to note that Marlee Matlin is identified in the press release as a “new series regular.”

Jackie Warner is back for another Work Out on March 20th, in which she juggles relationships and therapy with the launch of a new business venture. Look for our interview with Mimi in the next few weeks, when she explains how biting is normal in Brazil.

The new Buffy-meets-Supernatural Lifetime series Blood Ties starts this Sunday. Currently Christina Cox’s character is bisexual in name only, but the show’s producers swear that’s just a ploy to get the show on the air and they’ll explore her bi side down the road. We’ll have an interview with Christina herself on AfterEllen.com on Monday, and in the meantime, you can already download the first episode for free on iTunes!

AfterEllen.com is going to be at Dinah Shore again this year, and this time we’re having booths at both pool parties (at the Doral and the Wyndham), plus a cocktail party with guests like the cast of Logo’s Curl Girls, Michelle Paradise from the upcoming lesbian comedy Exes and Oh’s, actress Jill Bennett, singer Jamie Blake (Vixtrola) and, of course, the staff of AfterEllen.com and some of the co-hosts of She Said What? Read all the details about how to attend our party on our new Dinah Shore page.

Don’t know what Dinah Shore is, or think it’s just an annual golf tournament?

Short answer: Yes, it’s a golf tournament. If by “golf tournament” you mean “lesbian Hieronymus Bosch painting come to life.”

That’s it for this week! Check back next Friday for a new edition of Best. Lesbian. Week. Ever.
