Morning Brew – Laura Prepon will be back for most of “Orange is the New Black”

Good morning!

Thanks to Heather Hogan for doing the Brew for me while I was out yesterday.

Bob Harper has some pretty cool friends.

Laura Prepon is going to be a bigger part of Orange is the New Black‘s second season than previously reported. Show creator Jenji Kohan says, “You’ll see her for most of it.” You can now breathe easy and set down your pitchforks.

The BBC did a piece on out snowboarder Belle Brockhoff. I can’t wait to see her in action in Sochi.

Out blues singer Gwen Avery has passed at the age of 71. SoulTracks writes:

Avery was best known for her composition “Sugar Mama”, which was featured on Olivia Records’ groundbreaking collection, Lesbian Concentrate, in 1977.
Rest in peace Ms. Avery.

London-based lesbian activist and writer Amy Lame (pronounced “Luh-may”) is running for Labour’s Parliamentary candidate in Dulwich and West Norwood. Yay for Lame!

Initiation is NSFW short film that “explores the rituals of American Ivy League secret societies.” However it is very lesbian-sexual and I don’t know that that is par for the course at Harvard and the like.

Out New Yorker writer Ariel Levy penned a profile of Diana Nyad for the current issue. You’ll have to buy the hard copy to read the whole thing. Worth it, I’m sure!

Also in the New Yorker, our very own Lucy Hallowell’s #gaydybunch being referenced in a piece on The Fosters.

Jezebel isn’t into Rihanna and Shakira’s faux lesbianism in their new video. I feel like Rihanna’s Sapphic side might be so faux….

A former stud-identified lesbian (now an ex-gay) has written about the dangers of “Same Love.” It makes me feel so sad for her.

Annie Leibowitz shot for this year’s Vanity Fair Hollywood issue and Lea Seydoux is one of the cover girls. She was very excited to meet Annie she says in this behind-the-scenes video.

Kyle Chandler has been added to the cast of Carol. He’ll be playing Cate Blanchett’s husband. But the good news is we won’t have to wait for that movie to be filmed and released because Cate is playing gay in a current TV show in the meantime! She’s been cast as “a meth addicted, alcoholic lesbian on the Aussie ABC Drama series Rake.” Says show star Richard Roxburgh:

“Cate’s an old friend and I’ve worked with her a lot … we just thought it would be hilarious if she would turn up in the guise of a hard-drinking, lesbian version of Cleaver Greene, in the film within the film. She of course gave it the Blanchett magic and it’s very tongue-in-cheek and very fun.”

So basically Cate is playing an actress who is playing a lesbian in a movie that’s being watched on the TV show. Got it?
