Morning Brew – Ali Liebert talks being attracted to women

Good morning! A Montreal couple was kicked out of a bar, LeManoir in Pointe-Claire, for kissing. The bar owner has since apologized for the actions of the manager and says he welcome all people to kiss in any of the bars he owns. The New York Times profiled homeless LGBTQ people in San Francisco and what’s being done to help them. Also in the Times, a parent writes in to ask if their lesbian daughter should “conceal hear sexuality” when applying for colleges. They handle it correctly, by asking other LGBT students if they included their queerness in their essays. The answer: If it was relevant. But the best part is the end:

Clearly you’ve given your daughter a strong sense of self and the confidence to be who she is, even if the world is not as tolerant as we’d all hope. Sure, one of a parent’s jobs is to worry, but after 17 or so years you can’t be there for every important decision in life. So, please reconsider what message you are sending to her when you ask her to conceal her identity.

NY Castings has an uh-mazing handful of interviews with women who currently play gay on our TV screens. I’m talking Charlotte Sullivan, Jes Macallan, Ali Liebert, Lauren Collins, Shiri Appleby and Elizabeth McLaughlin. Charlotte might be a married woman, but she does say this when asked if she’s ever had a crush on a woman:

“Women are the sweet nectar of this earth. I’m quite mesmerized and infatuated by many, particularly Evan Rachel Wood. I love watching her performances. What a talented [being]. It certainly helps playing my character when I love and adore women so much.”

And Ali Liebert answered a similar question:

“When I’m attracted to someone, I’m attracted to them and yes, I’ve definitely been attracted to women in real life. Doing research is one of my favorite parts of the job as an actor and luckily there are so many resources to draw from – books, the internet, real people. Talking to lesbians who lived through the war, or have lived in homes or places that were homophobic was especially helpful as I was creating and understanding Betty’s point of view of the world.”

Something else I learned: Shiri was in the same sorority as her on-screen ex Lauren German in college! They’ve known each other for years! Read those interviews, for real. Speaking of Rookie Blue‘s gay girls, Aliyah O’Brien (aka Charlotte’s on-screen love interest) stars in a new lesbian-themed film called Citizen Jane.

Uzo Aduba talked with Netflix about playing Crazy Eyes and running the New York Marathon. She talks about her favorite teams within Lichfield:

“OK. I love Team Taystee, Danielle. I love Team Dayanara, Dascha Polanco. And I love Team Piper, Taylor Schilling. I love Team Piper! I shot most of my season with Taylor and it was just so cool to work with someone who was just so open and and so available and, frankly, just such an incredible team leader on the show. So I’ve gotta give love to my dandelion! ”

Congrats to Norway’s Next Top Model winner, out lesbian musician and student Frida Børli Solaker! AE reader Bente sent in the tip, and wow, so glad she did. You can follow Frida on Twitter for occasional English tweets! If you love Vita Sackville-West and author Carol Anshaw, you will enjoy Carol’s paintings of Vita! I need one/all of them. I feel compelled to tell you that Lady Gaga has a mustache and, well, is otherwise nude on the cover of Candy this month.
