Somehow, it’s October. You know what that means – Halloween is just around the corner, and it’s time to get your geek on and get your costume ready. I’ve long maintained that it’s the nerdiest of holidays – the only time each year that non-cosplaying adults are allowed (and encouraged!) to dress up as a favorite character and make use of the old imagination.
I09 has an amazing gallery of the “sluttiest and weirdest store bought” costumes for this year, and by Jove, they weren’t kidding. They posted an amazing gallery of outfits, from the adorably geeky (like Sesame Street characters), to the creepy-cute (Tim Burton movie inspired costumes), to the terrifying (the furry ravers). Topping it all off are geeky cliché soon-to-be-classics, like the Jem and the Holograms trio and “sexy astronaut” and “sexy ninja” get-ups.
Be sure to take a look at the “Missing the point of Wonder Woman” section for a few what not to do pointers. Of course, that dials directly into the whole phenomena of unnecessarily sexing up every costume, but that’s a topic for another day.
This Halloween, I’m expecting more than a few Katniss Everdeens (The Hunger Games), Snow Whites (of the more badass Snow White and the Huntsman variety), and Black Widows (Avengers style). And we cannot forget Catwoman, who was, in my opinion, the real star of The Dark Knight Rises.
Do you have a geeky/genre fiction inspired costume in the works? Do tell!
If you’re planning to host a costume party at home – or you just need an excuse to decorate with dorky panache, ThinkGeek is releasing a series of drool-worthy posters in honor of famous Original Series Star Trek episodes.
The first set, which is now available, features “The City on the Edge of Forever,” “Dagger of the Mind,” “The Ultimate Computer” and “The Way to Eden,” all done up in playful, ’60s style. If these don’t tickle your fancy, four more will be released each month. I can’t wait to see what they come up with for “Spock’s Brain.”
