Morning Brew – Monday, Sept. 17: Naya Rivera wins another ALMA, Clare Balding calls for more lesbians on TV

Good morning!

Firstly, a huge congrats to Brandi Carlile for tying the knot to partner Catherine Shepherd this past Saturday. The two married in Boston, where they made it legal, and will have two more celebrations coming up in Seattle and London. I can’t wait to see photos of what they wore.

Here’s what else happened over the weekend. Naya Rivera won her second and third ALMA awards for favorite TV comedy actress and favorite female musician.

Carrie Brownstein and Karey Dornetto attended the Creative Arts Emmys.

As did Dot Marie Jones.

The Atlantic has a post called How to Tell That a Show is Past its Expiration Date and cites some of our favorites as having jumped the shark early on. I admittedly watched The O.C. until the end, and I’m sure many of you stuck with Buffy, despite the fact she did, indeed, die twice.

Clare Balding talked with The Times about lesbian visibility on UK TV.

I remember an article that said, “Lesbians are like baby pigeons: you never see them,” and then naming a couple — me and Sue Perkins. Television, newspapers need more visible women, full stop. That’s why the Olympics have been so great, because you realize that women come in all shapes and sizes, short and tall, old and young. And yes, some of them are lesbians.

I miss the Olympics, too, Clare! But I’m psyched to read her book, My Animals and Other Family. She spoke with The Guardian about the memoir. A quote:

People like to think of you as a certain person, or a certain type of person, and they do love to give you a label. We like luggage labels, and we like people labels. The interesting thing that’s happened this summer is that I’m a presenter, and not even necessarily just a sports presenter, and certainly not any longer a lesbian presenter. So I think in that sense there’s been a shifting of attitude, because now everybody knows and it’s just part of the story but it’s not the most interesting thing.

X-Factor UK hopeful Jade Ellis is a mom of a 6-year-old and a lesbian. She also seems to fancy judge/mentor Nicole Sherzinger, which could be really interesting.

Speaking of lesbian moms, a Florida pair won the lottery! Congrats to Tarra Tuttle and Cary Tullos on getting 10 million dollars for trying their luck. I didn’t fare so well in Vegas last weekend.
