Tuesday is here and Mercury is definitely in retrograde because I have been having the worst time with any electronic device I’ve tried to use in order to bring this column to you earlier. Thankfully, I’m visiting my favorite lesbian power couple, Karman Kregloe and Bridget McManus in L.A. and they can see my problems first-hand instead of just thinking I’m hungover in Chicago and that’s the reason my column is running late. I won’t make you wait any longer; enjoy.

Purity Ring – Shrines (4AD)
The debut album from this dark electronic act makes for surprisingly easy listening without putting you to sleep. I’d say they fall somewhere in between The xx, Grimes and maybe a bit of M83. Each element, be it vocal, electronic or instrumental, stands out on its own while also helping to highlight the other parts surrounding it. You can stream the album in its entirety over at NPR.

MoZella – The Brian Holland Sessions (Belle Isle Records)
MoZella may call Los Angeles home these days but there is no mistaking her Detroit roots. Blue-eyed soul is alive and well with this one and the well-crafted collection of songs are a toe-tapping, finger-snapping bit of goodness in the same vein of Mayer Hawthorne and The Supremes. I’m really impressed with how polished the album is – though I should expect nothing less with Motown legend, Brian Holland, as co-producer for this work. Stream and download her single, “Another You”, below.
