Morning Brew – Mon. July 23: “Glee,” “Pretty Little Liars,” and Ellen clean up at the Teen Choice Awards, Beccy Cole comes out

Good morning, Brewbies! Our fearless lezzy-news leader, Trish Bendix, is at the Television Critics Association summer press tour, so while she’s busting her ass to bring us every gay happening – from interviews to television news to juicy gossip – I’ll be prepping your Morning Brew.

It was a gay ol’ time at the Teen Choice Awards last night. Ellen DeGeneres took home the trophy – er, surfboard – for Choice Comedian. Pretty Little Liars won the prize for Choice TV Drama. And Glee brought it home with a win in the Choice TV Comedy category. We approve!

It was also a gay ol’ time at San Diego Pride this weekend, especially for America’s military servicemen and servicewomen, who, for the first time ever, were allowed by the Pentagon to march in a Pride parade in their uniforms. Generally speaking, the Defense Department prohibits soldiers from wearing their uniforms in any parades unless they have permission from a superior officer, but they made a blanket exception over the weekend due to the national media attention the parade was garnering. Click here for a really moving photo gallery of the uniformed troops marching in the parade (and a bonus gay military engagement!).

One Million Moms, the conservative action group comprised of about three dozen moms, is at it again. This time their target is NBC’s forthcoming Ryan Murphy sitcom The New Normal, which centers around a gay couple adopting a child. Their statement:

NBC is using public airwaves to continue to subject families to the decay of morals and values, and the sanctity of marriage in attempting to redefine marriage. These things are harmful to our society, and this program is damaging to our culture.

NBC took a look at Modern Family‘s ratings success and trophy case full of Emmys and Golden Globes and told the One Million Moms to shove it up their tits. (I’m paraphrasing.)

Also, frankly, I’m glad to see this group speaking out against The New Normal, because every time they open their mouths, they get the exact opposite reaction to the one they want. They targeted JCPenney when the department store made Ellen DeGeneres its spokesperson, so JCPenney cooked up some pro-gay Mother’s Day and Father’s Day ads. They targeted Oreo for being all Prideful, and a dozen other companies released Pride-themed snack ads. They targeted gay characters in comic books, and Green Lantern came out. So keep protesting The New Normal, Bigot Moms! Every character on NBC will be gay by 2013!

Australian country singer Beccy Cole came out as a lesbian on the news program Australian Story yesterday. She said it was her son who inspired her to talk openly and publicly about her sexuality:

While you can have your privacy and all that, there are certain times and certain issues where I want to set an example to him. I have never hidden who I am from him. What started me thinking about revealing this more publicly was he was bringing a friend home and said, “Don’t worry mum, I haven’t said anything.” My 13-year-old son was trying to protect me. It’s such a crucial time for him and he needs to see his mum standing up.

Congratulations, Beccy!

Openly gay lady Jessica Clark made her first appearance on True Blood last night as Lilith, The Original Vampire. According to our Editor in Chief, Karman Kregloe, Clark was, “Naked, naked, naked!” According to the screencaps I found on Tumblr, she was also bathing, bathing, bathing in blood.

If you saw The Dark Knight Rises over the weekend and wondered if Anne Hathaway‘s Selina Kyle had a little gay thing going on with that roommate of hers, don’t worry – you weren’t alone. New York Magazine‘s Vulture blog wondered the same thing:

Hathaway has become a delicious comedian and makes Selina one, too, a con artist who uses her lithe body teasingly and knows you know she aims to hoodwink you – just not precisely when. Is Selina a lesbian? Nolan gives her a bedraggled little blonde thing to whom she’s mighty attentive.

The real lesbian villains of the Batverse are obviously super-couple Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy, but a gay geek girl can dream.

Of course, I can’t write about TDKR without saying that all of our hearts go out to the victims and families of the Aurora, Colorado shooting over the weekend. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.
