Question: I heard that Lucy Lawless will soon be doing a live show in Los Angeles. Can you tell us more?

— Anonymous

Answer: Yes, it's true, and it looks to be pretty spectacular. The show, Welcome to the Pleasure Dome will be staged at The Roxy in Los Angeles this weekend, January 30-31, and tickets are still available.

While Lawless is perhaps best known for her television and film credits (Xena: Warrior Princess, Battlestar Galactica, Bitch Slap, and that priceless Stevie Nicks parody on Saturday Night Live), she's also an accomplished singer who has received rave reviews for her live shows.

According to the press release for Welcome to the Pleasure Dome, it's based "on a screenplay set in the time when the music group Frankie Goes to Hollywood ruled the airwaves as well as everyone’s T-shirts."

Lawless says, "This post-disco period was epitomized by high times in low places. Where disco was a sparkly diversion from the humdrum. The era I grew up in fully acknowledged, even celebrated, its own dark side.”

“The Pleasuredome” brings the audience into a world of sex, drugs, temptation and redemption, about which, Lawless says,"I don't know why, but I do 'Bad-Girl' really well." She further states, "My fans always enjoy a tale of redemption...with a heapin' helpin' of Wickedness along the way."

Music from the show includes songs by Patti Smith, Eurhythmics, Soft Cell, Cyndi Lauper, Garbage, Marilyn Manson and Jet.

Read Lawless's recent blogposts and watch video clips of her rehearsals at LucyLawlessFanClub.com, and you can buy tickets to the Pleasure Dome show here.

Bridget McManus and I are hoping to attend, and maybe even interview the divine Ms. Lawless for our show, You Can't Take Them Anywhere. If you want us to ask her anything in particular (except "Who killed Jenny?"), then let us know in your comments below.

Question: Karman Kregloe what is like to be married to Bridget MacManus? (I'm so jealous, but I always knew you were together...)

— Vale, Santiago, Chile

Bridget McManus and Karman Kregloe

Answer: Being married to Bridget McManus is exactly the E ticket ride that any perceptive woman would imagine it to be. Let's put it this way: if our life together were a television series, it would be a mixture of 24, I Love Lucy, and The Muppet Show. During sweeps week.

(I just read my answer to Bridget, and she asked if by "E ticket" I meant an electronic airline ticket, which is why I added the explanatory Wikipedia link. She assures me that no one else on the site will know what "E ticket ride" means either. Please prove her wrong, and viva la generation gap!)

Hahahaha

Thanks for answering my question about the L Word STD, Karmen! Your answer makes total sense to me. Damn them, and their little dog too.

Edit: And I've never heard of the E Ticket thing. But after reading what it is about I'm glad they don't do that anymore. That actually really surprises me they managed their parks that way... Maybe I'm just so used to the present day way of doing things. What a rip off, only being to ride some of the rides lol.

Dude...

Dude... You crack me up.

I honestly don't know whether to be creeped out by you or just laugh out loud.

You're... everywhere. Anytime someone somewhere in cyberspace writes the word Lucy Lawlesss, there you are. With your crazy insane gibberish talk. And somewhere inside of that you can actually make out something sane.

I keep bumping into your "love letters" online, for the past couple YEARS! Are you a legend by now? Are you writting from prison?

yeah...no idea what an E Ticket ride is

But this could be because I was born in 1982. Sorry Karman--i'm thinking Bridget might be right about this one.

Great article and really good questions. I feel like its another BLWE!

e-ticket

when you said E ticket ride I immediately thought of ecstacy and not Disney land.

Viva la lost childhood!

playthemusic814's picture

LOL

I thought it was a drug reference, too! Considering the subject matter, I think it would be fitting. Anywho, yeah, I was born in 1985 so, this is the first I've heard of the phrase... That is a lovely way to describe a marriage though. We should all be so lucky.

E-Ticket

I knew exactly what you meant by "e-ticket ride," Karman, but then I turn 53 next month.  I have used an e-ticket for a ride!
ebronte76's picture

E-Tickets and Julie Brown!

I barely remember the e-tickets from Disneyland, being only 33 now... they stopped using them when I was 6...but I was there when I was 5 an remember the extreme disappointment of my parents telling me that we were out of e-tickets and they would not be buying anymore.

Plus e-tickets were never allowed to escape from my memory thanks to Julie Brown, who mentioned them in her 1987 song "The Homecoming Queen's Got a Gun".  That classic piece of music is still a family favorite!

She looked so pretty in pink chiffon, chiffon
Riding the float with her tiara on, tiara on
Holding this humongous bouquet in her hand, bouquet
She looked straight out of Disneyland

You know, like the Cinderella ride, I mean definitely an E ticket,

Thank God for Wikipedia

I've never been to Disney and I definitely thought you meant an electronis ticket until I clicked the link... Sorry :)

Mmm, Jorja.

Crap! I must be old!

I knew immediately what you meant by E ticket!  I had my share of E tickets back in the day when I was a wee one.

I am jealous too....

Karman n' bridget make a great couple. Love Karman's wittty n' Bridget's Hotttneesss... um... I meant you both are witty n' hott.. :D

question to L.Lawless:1)  how do you keep up your hotness?!! 2) what is it like to be the sergant on the L word? 3) Do you know what "e-ticket ride" means? (if she doesn't then Karman can once again show off her smart-@$$-ness n' explan to Lucy)

Nope, I didn't know what e-ticket mean... thx for the link...

Hollywood Marie's picture

You're not old

I don't think that information (E ticket) has anything to do with age -- I'm 27 and I knew immediately what you meant.  It's just a cultural awareness thing.
Lana's picture

Nothing to do with age

I immediately knew what Karman meant. And I'm only 19, soon to be 20. ;)

I do know what an E ticket ride is but only because my Geology professor last semester explained what it is to all of us! Sorry :-(

"if our life together were

"if our life together were a television series, it would be a mixture of 24, I Love Lucy, and The Muppet Show. During sweeps week."  Sounds like fun, can I watch?  Actually . . . that sounds kind of wrong, and *so* not how I meant it.

With Karman's writing and Bridget's comedy, you guys should collaborate and make something -- a tv show, or a Jane's-World-esque comic thing.  I bet it would be great!

And no, I had no idea what an E Ticket was.  Sorry!

E ticket & Xena Convention

= / Sorry Karman have to go with Bridget on this one totally thought you ment the like and airplane ticket at first. But hey I might just be a naive 19 year old.

Are you guys going to be checking out the Xena convention while your there?

Glindared's picture

It is so a generational thing

I knew what E Ticket was...largely because of Sally Ride and My Grandparents having gone to Disneyland....tried to find the E-Ticket at Disney World in Florida was a no go...but went to Cape Canaveral...so cool...its also like no one now a days knows who the Fonz is?! I crushed soooo badly on Joanie!....so glad to hear of your wedded bliss with Bridget...you are sooooooo lucky!!!

Keep up the great work u guys are doing...hope there will be another After Ellen Meet n greet in NYC...in the near future...getting close to the anniversary date...welll May 18th...Ooooh there will be a HUGE AIDs walk going on that weekend in Central park...on Sunday May 17th....anyhoo...love your blogs...

Karmen slays me!

Sorry Karmen I have to agree with Bridget, I thought you were referring to an airline ticket.  I love when you talk about your marriage. For the next addition of Ask Afterellen can you tell us how you two met and fell in love?  Which night are you seeing Lucy perform because I'd love to meet you two in person?

Ha! I also thouht Karman

Ha! I also thouht Karman was talking about ecstasy with the "E ticket ride" thing. Born in 1982 - December at that - so I guess it was before my time. Not to mention never been to Disney World and lived in Jamaica until I was 19!

Anyhoo, Bridget and Karman are lovely and deserve each other - in that good way.

Pleasure Dome!!!

I really wish I could go!! Lucy is certainly amazing.

Yep I had no idea what an E ticket was. But then again I've only been to Disneyland once. Thanks for making me laugh after a day of study Karman!!

Questions for Lucy: 1. Well if you are going to interview her I'm sure you would ask this but what about upcoming projects? 2. Does she know that people still talk about Xena a lot? My ancient history teacher just used Xena as an example in class today! 3.How does she maintain her awsomness?

E-Ticket and LL

Great column as usual.  Always love to hear about La Flawless!  How about asking if there is anything in the works with her and Renee doing an adaptation of any of Melissa Good's Dar and Kerry stories?

Karman, I can only imagine life with Bridget as an E-ticket ride!  I sure do remember them, Space Mountain being my favorite one!  I think you two make an adorable couple and I can only wish for you a Lifetime of happiness.

Say, for a future travel adventure, what about you two taking the Zero Gravity flight out of Florida?  I can just imagine you doing that! lol  Take care!

I did get the E-ticket

I did get the E-ticket reference, though sadly it's only because my mom always tells me about the good ol' Disneyland days when they gave you precious few E tickets and buttloads (my words, not hers) of the crappy A tickets.  I think she's still a little bitter...

On a related note I thought it would be awesome to go to the Lucy Lawless show until I found out the tickets are $60.  What, do they think I'm rich or something?!

So much good stuff

So much good stuff in this week's AA. I guess we are all wondering about the same things (how original).

-I love Nicola Griffith's blog and everyone should definitely check it out.

-I'm sad to hear Naiad Press is no more, as they used to have the best lesbian pulp.

-Ah Tanita Tikarim. I used to love Twist in my sobriety when I was a melancholic teenager.

Lawless Live

Very interesting, I do hope you get to interview Lucy. Have you got t-shirts yet?
If you do interview her, I think you should ask her what it was like to work with Renee and they boys from Hercules in 'Bitch Slap' and how she got involved with that project.
She mentions in her blog that she's going off the radar for a while, what can we expect from her when she returns?
As Xena she was always saving the day. Now she's saving the planet. Any campaign's she's heading up?
Also, a tip for the two of you, she also says about the Roxy Show, "All those of you who are coming, dress for a night at the Pleasuredome!  Think sexy.  Boys-will-be-girls-will-be-boys Glamour!  Prudes need not apply.  Check your inhibitions at the door!"
Have fun!

E Ticket

I am glad you included the link because, like Bridget, when I hear E Ticket, I think 'ticket purchased online'. That could have changed the meaning of the whole paragraph.

It isn't an age thing. I am Karman's age. I remember tickets at Disneyland, but I don't remember having any sense that some tickets were more valuable than others.

Mason's picture

I got the E-Ticket thing.

I got the E-Ticket thing.  I thought that was general knowledge, but maybe it's just further proof that I'm a huge geek...  then again, what good is a Pop Culture reference if it's not just a tiny bit esoteric?

At any rate, glad to hear your marriage is like an E-Ticket ride.  Lesbian happy endings are the best kind (I'm really not trying to make a dirty joke here...).

Sorry. I didn't know what it was either but I'm the same age as Bridget so...

Ok, fishnets and leather

Ok, fishnets and leather chaps are a very good look on Lucy. My question, can she wear that, 24/7? Please?

Also, I've loved Michelle Bonilla ever since that All Access Pass interview, so thanks for the information about her new film. She's gorgeous, and really funny.

E Tickets

Blackpool Pleasure Beach over here in the UK still used the E ticket system until about a year or two ago (although they didn't call it that as the most expensive rides were A rides). So I knew what you were talking about Karman!

Thanks for the Wikipedia link!

Karman, thanks for the Wikipedia link - E-ticket's a little before my time, even if I'm in my 30s!

The e-ticket reference made me feel young...

Sorry Karman, but I too must jump on the Bridget bandwagon and say I didn't know what an e-ticket was either. But since they were discontinued in 1982 and that was the year I came into this world, I'm not surprised. That and I've never been to Disneyland nor do I care to. Sorry kids, but if I'm going to theme park I'm going some place that doesn't break my bank account and I'll actually get a chance to get on the rides in one day.

My Question for AfterEllen

My Question for AfterEllen ....

Is there going to be anymore SHE MADE ME WATCH THIS and WERE GETTING NOWHERE vlogs ???  Or are these 2 vlogs done and gone ????

SubtextRules's picture

Answer...

Tristen, We're Getting Nowhere was discontinue last year. Jill Bennett has since joined the SheWired family and Karman and Dara have their own amazing show. I'm not entirely sure about She Made Me Watch This. It's my understanding that both Sarah and Lori are extremely busy so episodes tend to be few and far between. I'm sure Sarah gets quite a few e-mails from loyal AE members begging them to start back up again. So just be patience, I'm sure something will eventually happen.
