THE UPFRONTS ARE COMING! THE UPFRONTS ARE COMING!
This Monday, May 15th, sees the kickoff of the TV networks annual upfront presentations to potential advertisers, which allows us to find out exactly which new shows have been picked up for the fall or mid-season TV schedule, and which current shows will be returning next season. There are lots of cool shows on the horizon, including the CBS sitcom The Class, and NBC's Heroes, Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, and the untitled Tina Fey sitcom (I'll pretty much watch anything Tina does). But there's not much to root for from a lesbian visibility perspective, besides hoping that Out of Practice gets renewed (which isn't likely), and that ABC picks up the legal drama previously known as Women in Law, then Sisters in Law, and now High Bar.

Speaking of High Bar, aka Women in Law, former Practice star Kelli Williams mentioned the pilot and her lesbian role in her interview with TV Guide this week:

"I don't want to stereotype myself, but what I like about this is it's an office drama more than it's a legal drama. It's more about the relationships between these women. And besides, if I'm going to play a lawyer again, I might as well be pregnant and a lesbian. That trumps the others!"

TV needs another pregnant lesbian like it needs another legal drama, but never mind--given the bleak network TV landscape next season, she had me at "lesbian".

IN RELATED NEWS, LIEFETIME HAS DECIDED TO CALL ITSELF A NETWORK FOR MEN
This week Bravo announced the June 1st launch of OutzoneTV, "the first online broadband destination for entertaining, thought-provoking content about and for the LGBT audience."

And by "LGBT", they mean "Lots of Gay Beautiful Types of men".

Here's a look at some of the content they have lined up on OUTzoneTV:

Three of Hearts (a documentary about two bisexual men and a straight woman), My Gay Husband, Cooking's a Drag, Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, the 1972 gay movie That Certain Summer, blogs by two gay men (one about Project Runway), and Fashion Video, featuring "the Men's Bikini Open and in-depth profiles of male models in The Models: The Men" (I'm really not making that last one up).

What do they have devoted to the women in the "LGBT audience"? A segment in which a Latina lesbian talks about the 9/11 tragedy. No, I'm not kidding, that's really all they have for lesbian and bisexual women so far.

It's getting so easy to point out Bravo's ongoing hypocrisy when it comes to representing lesbians, it's almost no fun anymore, like shooting fish in a barrel--witty, gay fish in flamboyant outfits, with "No Girls Allowed" stamped on the barrel.

I'LL NEVER GET ANY WORK DONE AGAIN
While the lesbian pickings might be slim on Bravo's upcoming "gay and lesbian" entertainment site, there's a wealth of lesbian entertainment to be found at YouTube.com, the video sharing website with millions of user-submitted videos that can be easily (and freely) watched by anyone with an Internet connection and a browser (no special viewer software required).

There are some official videos worth checking out, like the trailer for Loving Annabelle and a compilation of Luce and Rachel's scenes in Imagine Me and You. But the real treasure is all the fan-created music videos devoted to lesbian characters and storylines from movies like Tipping the Velvet D.E.B.S., and Saving Face, and TV shows like Once and Again, Degrassi, and even Spain's Hospital Central.

Not surprisingly, there are tons of videos devoted to The L Word, including this funny homage to Bette set to the '90s song "I'm Too Sexy", and this more serious ode to love and heartbreak on Season 3, set to Daniel Bedingfield's "If You're Not the One". There are also more South of Nowhere videos than you can ever watch, like this compilation of Ashley and Spencer's final scenes, and a nicely edited "Spashley-Malex" music video, which uses Audioslave's "Be Yourself" to pay tribute to Ashley and Spencer, and Alex and Marissa from The O.C.

But my favorite lesbian-related video so far? This very clever combination of the British trailer for Imagine Me and You and the characters from South of Nowhere. It's truly brilliant.

In related news, the first season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer is now available to download on iTunes. And did I mention that on You Tube, there are 407 videos devoted to Willow and her girlfriends?

God bless lesbians with technology and too much free time--they truly do make the world a better place for all of us.

That's it for this week! Check back next Friday for a new installment of Best. Lesbian. Week. Ever. or read past installments here.
