LESBIANS (NOT) ON NETWORK TV
Arianna Huffington's statement on the Season 2 premiere of The L Word that "dykes are the new fags" is as wrong as Carmen's rat-tail haircut. At least when it comes to network TV.

In addition to the lopsided ratio (about 9 to 1) of gay versus lesbian characters on new network TV shows this season, even the smaller, recurring characters coming out this season are of the male variety. In the next two weeks, a male character is going to be outed on an upcoming episode of Commander in Chief.

Then, in the next month or two, one of the existing characters--not Reid--on Everwood is going to be revealed to be gay (see AfterElton.com's Best. Gay. Week. Ever. for more details on these developments).

But minor female network TV characters batting for the other team so far this season? Yeah, that's a big "none". We can't even get marginalized equally!

As usual, things are a little better on cable. HBO's Rome continues to include a minor Sapphic storyline, and the new teen series South of Nowhere premieres tonight on The Noggin, complete with budding teen lesbian relationship. Then in January, Chastity Bono joins 7 other celebrities on the third season of VH1's Celebrity Fit Club, a show in which eight overweight stars are challenged to get fit and lose weight over a 14 week period.

Now that I think about it, in the last decade queer women have gotten more than our fair share of exposure on the "I'm a Lesbian and I'm Sleeping with Your Wife" type of episodes on the Ricki Lake/Jerry Springer-type network TV talk shows. So really, it all evens out in the end, right?

MORE PRACTICE
There is some good network TV news this week: Out of Practice, whose lesbian ER doc is the only new regular lesbian character on network TV this season, has just been picked up for a full season by CBS. Each episode of the sitcom, which also stars Stockard Channing, Henry Winkler, and Christopher Gorham, averages around 11.97 million viewers, two lesbian jokes, and, so far, no lesbian kisses. But stay tuned: November Sweeps is just days away.

In other TV news, Ellen DeGeneres plays herself in a small guest appearance on the November 10th episode of Joey (NBC), and bisexual comedian Margaret Cho has just signed a deal with Fox to develop a sitcom based on her mother.

DVD NEWS
The good news for UK readers: you're finally getting the second season of The L Word on DVD. The bad news: not until September 2006.

In the U.S., The Journey--a movie about a lesbian relationship between two teen girls in a small town in India--is being released on DVD on February 14th, and Jodie Foster's Flightplan is coming out on January 24th. (Jodie Foster coming-out not included.)

That's it for this week! Check back next Friday for a new installment of Best. Lesbian. Week. Ever. or read past installments of Best. Lesbian. Week. Ever.
