Lucy Lawless in the Pleasuredome: A live report

I tried to get some coherent commentary out of AfterEllen.com photographer KT Jorgensen about last night's Lucy Lawless concert at LA's Roxy Theater, but she just kept saying it was incredible and amazing and she really didn't know what else to say.

Fortunately she wasn't so incapacitated that she wasn't able to use her cameras, and she even remembered how to upload photos after enough caffeine hit her system. Lucky us.

The event began with the usual crowd of every lesbian within a hundred miles waiting outside:

Comedian Cat Crimins opened the show, as she did last year.

After that... welcome to "The Pleasuredome."

From the show's official press release:

“The Pleasuredome” brings the audience into a world of sex, drugs, temptation and redemption, about which, Lawless says,"I don't know why, but I do 'Bad-Girl' really well." She further states, "My fans always enjoy a tale of redemption...with a heapin' helpin' of Wickedness along the way."

Or as Lucy described it to me last week:

This is a re-imagining of a script that my husband and his friend wrote in the period of 'Frankie Goes to Hollywood. It's about the time at the dawning of AIDS, and how everybody was partying with this sort of cold fear at their backs. The show encompasses the grimness of that reality with the glitter of the nightclub.

She also promised her lesbian fans "some sugar." And why yes, I do find this kind of sweet:

Seems our Lucy is not the good Catholic schoolgirl the nuns would like her to be after all.

She runs off to the big city, where she meets and falls in love with Pleasuredome emcee Gloria, played by actor/singer Laura Sperrazza:

In addition to songs by Eurythmics, Marilyn Manson, Soft Cell, Cyndi Lauper, Garbage, and Jet, Lucy channels the woman she calls her "rock goddess," Patti Smith:

We also get to meet punk schoolgirl Lucy:

And we all live happily ever after.

On the video where she's rehearsing "Losing My Religion," she's doing the same arrangement that Suzie McNeil did for "Rockstar: INXS"? Please tell me I'm not the only one that knows this. I love that arrangement and I thought it was really cool that Lucy chose to use it for her show!

Oh, and yeah, that show was really freakin' hot!!! Only wish I coulda seen it live!

For a second I thought that too! But you can see Lucy is wearing a skin tight, skin colored jumpsuit thingy. In the photo where she has black paint on her you can tell.

I can't wait for the concert DVD to come out...and thank god for it too!

If you see the video...the kiss was SO HOT...not chaste...and the music in the background...made it seem like this happy ending to some epic movie...beautiful.

My gf is right...Lucy knows how to keep her audience always wanting more.

she's gorgeous in person. tall, lithe, commanding. beautiful. i saw her in concert in san francisco late last year. the crowd at the convention is very lucky indeed.

before I interviewed her last time. It's hard enough to stay cool and professional when interviewing one's idols... I'm not sure my journalistic training would have won this particular battle.

It's not that easy to make me speechless, but these pictures damn near did just that... I was unable to articulate into any words that remotely made sense the envy I felt for the people that were in attendance and the annoyance at myself for not making my way out the LA to see Lucy. Those photos were spectacular!

I am a proud Xenite and huge Lucy Lawless fan. I really love the fact that she appreciates her lesbian audience enough to be so unabashedly sexy and full on in her shows that no lesbian ever feels left out. Xena:Warrior Princess may have been full of subtext but since its demise Lucy Lawless has blown subtext right out of the water and given her lesbian fans what we were hoping to see during the six year run of the show...

Lucy Lawless... you ROCK!

Thanks to everyone who has posted pictures, videos, write-ups of the show, etc. It's nice that even when not in attendance all this coverage makes me feel a little less sad for not having been there in person!

These are good pics!!!! I am going to have to get this on DVD....I was trying to figure out what they are doing in some of the pics, was it like some S&M thing going on? i love that lucy lawless totally works it for her lez crowd (though sometimes i wonder, how diff is it from when straight girls shamelessly flirt for attention?) - she's ridiculously good looking, and does the whole tongue-in-cheek humor so well. plus, she's not afraid to get a little dirty. looks like a romping stomping good time - love it.
