Chicks Getting Hitched: Think outside the (jewelry) box

Finding traditional diamond engagement rings or wedding bands isn’t very hard to do. You can’t open a magazine without being bombarded with ads hawking traditional diamond rings in any cut, size and setting you could want. What the mainstream magazines don’t show are all of the androgynous girls, butch women and other lesbian ladies who aren’t into big diamond rings or traditional feminine wedding bands.

If you’re one of those girls, no need to wear a ring that doesn’t feel right to you. Luckily, there’s a ton of unique jewelry out there that I think could make great wedding bands for chicks getting hitched.

The Cartier love knot

There’s nothing more classic — or gender neutral — than the Cartier love knot. This ring is understated, romantic and glamorous all at the same time, which is why it’s one of my top picks for lesbian wedding rings. The Cartier love knot is simple enough for couples who want to wear matching rings (awww), and also works if just one of you wants to wear it as a wedding band and the other chooses a different style. The Cartier love knot ring comes in white and yellow gold, and if you want a little sparkle, it also comes in a style with diamonds.

Not just for boys

If you’re the kind of girl who feels more comfortable in men’s clothing, you’ll probably also want a men’s wedding ring. There are a lot of elegant and modern men’s ring styles that could also work for lesbians. Like with men’s clothing, some rings may not be scaled for a woman’s hand. If you find a style you like, find a jeweler that can make a slightly smaller custom version just for you.

For a laid-back look, try an engraved silver ring like this one by Scott Kay.

If you want to sport some serious bling, but don’t want a girly diamond ring, I have the perfect solution for you. This David Yurman black diamond ring is edgy, but not so trendy that you’ll wonder what the heck you were thinking when you look at it on your 20th wedding anniversary.

A tried and true classic

I’m noticing lately that more and more couples — straight and gay — are opting to wear simple matching gold wedding bands. I think simple gold bands have a kind of European quaintness. Plus, they will never go out of style and won’t break the bank. There are even eco-friendly jewelers like Brilliant Earth that make wedding bands out of recycled gold.

Support an independent artist

Thanks to the explosion of online retailers, you don’t have to limit your jewelry shopping to big chains or local shops. You can find literally thousands of independent artists making unique pieces on sites like Etsy. I like this rustic ring sold by Zahour Jewelry on Etsy. Many Etsy sellers will even make custom pieces at your request, so you can support an independent artist and have a ring that you know is one of a kind.
