To move your avatar, click on it, hold down the mouse, then move the mouse around - OR just move your cursor to wherever you want to go in the room and double-click. 2. Click on your avatar then the "animations" tab to make it dance, wave, etc. Your avatar will also perform pre-programmed actions when you type in commonly-used acronymns like LOL and ROFL, or words like "laugh" or "no." 3. Add a Display Name to your avatar by clicking on your avatar and change the name in the field at the top of the pop-up window OTHER AVATARS 1. Right-click on other avatars to choose a list of actions to perform (kiss, slap, hug, high-five, etc.) OBJECTS 1. Click on objects to see what you can do with them (usually "sit" or "play animation") Leave your tips for other AE chat members in the comments. Okay i'm gonna sound really lame but this made me quite happy: the other day Karman replied to my message about what Mark Ronson said of Lindsay Lohan on "Never Mind the Buzzcocks", and then 'cus I'd tagged Dara in a screencaps on facebook she commented how she'd pay me to take the photo down (lmao) and then just now I was checking if anyone replied to any posts I made and found Sarah replied http://www.afterellen.com/node/38653#new
and then also while i was checking if I got any replies I found this wishing those 3 ppl would reply to something i wrote :P *yay* incidently, if the thing i suggested (in the link) got made then I'd have found out a lot easier!

Feedback from the first forays...
Hmmm. I am not sure I am coordinated enough to walk, laugh, talk and not fall in the pool. Gotta work on my mouse finesse.
It will take some getting used to the new names--since some of our AE names have to be different.
We are definitely all going to start looking alike without more variety in avitar choices. Any way to import some from elsewhere on that site? Or is that a moderator deal?
The muzak is a little problematic. I am not sure I could stay at an actual party for very long if they kept playing that. But other sound effects--cool.
Males as andro or butch choices were a little awkward. Although pretty cool for any FTMs in the crowd.

Re: avatar choices and customization in general - my understanding is that Google is working with a bunch of outside developers to roll out new furniture, clothing, avatars etc. every week. Then eventually we'll be able to create our own.
Nice additions.
The palm trees and ocean sounds are brilliant. And don't think we missed the bragging rights to your sister than you now have an even more spectacular pool and deck in the middle of NYC ;)
When we aren't talking, we look like a bunch of bobble-heads on some very strong pharmaceuticals, but that doesn't look as odd sitting up in the trees talking as it does standing around poolside.

It was a lot easier after I found the chat log thingy. It's impossible to figure out who says what without it.
Edit: I agree with Shan, the music got annoying after a while. And most of the laughing sounds are kinda creepy :D I ended up turning them off.
Re: avatar/clothing choices, make sure you check the catalog. You only start off with a couple of items but there are a lot more products in the catalog that you can add to your inventory.

Chat Compatibility Issues
RAM shouldn't be a problem with this application unless you have a very old laptop. :)
With a laptop, the video card could also be an issue since you likely have an onboard video card (Intel). You may need to just get the latest drivers.
Also, do you know if you have DirectX installed?
If you want to run a dxdiag and send it to me in a PM I can take a look and see if I can figure out whats wrong. To do that, you just go to Start > Run > Type in dxdiag
Then click save all information after it's loaded.

I like it a lot, it's a fun thing to do. Of course, it's just in its beta phase and has some bugs but it's still a nice addition to AfterEllen.
The customization of characters is one thing they have to work on. For example I choose a guy character because none of the girl characters seemed to do it for me.
The animations are quite funny too but it gets kinda annoying after a while, the laughter for example. Everytime you say haha or lol your character starts to laugh and it's a really creepy laugh :P
Anyways, it's really fun and kinda addicting. The discussions are nice too, L-wording and talking about how hot Carmen was for example ;)

Computer becomes slow
I tried...and I tried...and I tried... but I couldn't get in the chat room, yeah after 40 minutes I could say one thing and then it get stuck...again. As soon as I enter my username+password (for the chatroom), my computer becomes very slow (and normally it's always fast) and get stuck. I tried a couple a couple of times but everytime I try my computer is reaching a deadlock...so I'm going to stop now and try it tommorrow again.
So I apologize if people have talked to me and I didn't respond!!!

I was basically able to use my same name there but it was so slow for me and my avatar (which I didn't recognize for the longest time because it wasn't the one I picked! lol) jerked around and the room never fully materialized...before locking up my computer!
So if anyone tried to talk to me and I didn't respond...I swear I never saw it...I wasn't ignoring anyone!
