Carey Mulligan gets “Tattoo” … maybe

If you’re a fan of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (and if you’re not, why not?), you’ve no doubt been both curious and skeptical about the news that an American version of the film is going to be made. Curious because you wonder who could possibly play Lisbeth Salander better than Noomi Rapace, and skeptical because you wonder why anyone would want to try. According to TimesOnline, Carey Mulligan is up to the challenge. She reportedly has been cast as Lisbeth in the three-film Millennium trilogy, which covers adaptations of all three Girl books.

Mulligan has been openly pursuing the part ever since she read the books. “I am obsessed with those books,” she told reporters. “I would love to do [the movies]. I am not going to lie about that. I would love to play Lisbeth Salander.”

David Fincher, who is directing the American adaptation, and the family of late author Stieg Larsson, approve of the choice. The family has, in fact, been a major stumbling block in making the film, since they were wary of what Hollywood might do to the concept. But producer Scott Rudin has been working closely with the family and they seem to be on board at this point.

However, Jeff Wells from Hollywood Elsewhere reports that the casting of Mulligan is far from a done deal. Wells writes that Scott Rudin calls the Times report “absolutely not true.” The Playlist agrees, reporting that Fincher still would prefer to cast an unknown as Lisbeth and casting is still underway. Since the script still is not complete, I doubt that Mulligan has signed on any dotted lines. An actor of Mulligan’s caliber is unlikely to accept a role before reading the script. We’ll keep you posted as we learn more.

After seeing the Swedish version of Dragon Tattoo, I have mixed feelings about a remake. I think Rapace was the perfect Lisbeth, looks-wise, but the social awkwardness that so defined the character in the books was missing in the film. I’m sure that was due more to direction than acting talent, but I was a bit disappointed. On the other hand, I wouldn’t mind Rapace herself taking on the American version. Meanwhile, the American release of The Girl Who Played With Fire film, in Swedish with English subtitles, is July 2. And the third book in the trilogy, The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets’ Nest, is due for American release at the end of May.

What do you think of Carey Mulligan as Lisbeth? Do you think Noomi Rapace could pull off the American remake? Or should a complete unknown be cast?
